The Building codes and National Construction Codes in Australia has key
requirements which the different buildings must be able to meet in relation to fire
control and sustainability. The design, materials used and practices in construction
industries must be able to adhere to these regulations to enhance sustainability.
Different buildings are classified different and have different requirements in relation
to the fire regulations. The BCA and NCC are able to define the requirements which
must be met to secure the fire incidences in these buildings.
Question 1. Discuss the statement “In Australia, all buildings must comply with the
deemed to satisfy (DTS) provisions in the Building Code of Australia”. Illustrate your
answer by referring to the NCC Compliance Structure (100 words maximum, 2
marks).
The statement is means that the description of the construction methods, materials and
procedures will help to attain the required quality of end product. The BCA helps to
specify the procedures to be used in construction, the quality of materials and design
procedures which must be followed. According to NCC 2015 Volume 1 part A1 on
interpretations, DTS is defined to mean that the applied measures will be able to meet
the performance requirement defined. DTS assumes that any design, construction and
materials used in buildings in Australia are able to follow the laid procedures in the
construction industry. This will therefore lead to an end product which will meet the
required standards and performance.
Question 2. Classify the following building according the NCC and give the
reasons for your answer (2 marks). Indicate any assumption you make.
