The Secret
Character List
Narrator: An old man, clad in disproportionate robe, a flute/ small musical instrument in hand.
Guard 1: A young sentry in his twenties.
Guard 2: A middle-aged man, little plump. Group Captain of the army.
Girl: Trespasser from the village, in her late teen.
Lieutenant: Senior Army Officer. (Male/Female)
Marshall: The chief of the army. (Male/Female)
Scene 1
Narrator: (Plays his instrument unmindfully, then suddenly stops) Oh! Hello ladies and
gentleman! I see you have gathered here on this wonderful day! How I enjoy the company of a
learned audience! What can I offer you today? Pardon my frivolity, I have become a little
forgetful these days.
(Thinks) Ah! Let me tell you a story then. A story of a noble king, living peacefully in his
kingdom. (Mutters to himself… Was that a king? Or queen? Anyway…) The story unfolds in a
dystopian land, may be somewhere around, may be in a land far far away. It may have happened
ages ago, or am I merely telling you a story of a distant future. The people moving around the
stage—you may find them familiar, or not. Who knows?
Oh! What I am supposed to say here? Or do I even have something to say? Does anyone of us
have something to say at all? Well, you can judge for yourself, if you can judge at all.

2SCRIPT FOR SKIT
Scene 2
The City Gate. Two armed guards are dozing away. Parade music plays in the Background.
Guard 1: (Suddenly wakes up, startled. Looks around apprehensively. Then pokes his partner)
Captain! Wake up, wake up!
Guard 2: (Stops snoring) What??
Guard 1: Did you hear someone pass by the gate?
Guard 2: (Still dozing) Which way?
Guard 1: I guess he ran towards the village!
Guard 2: (Wakes up startled) Village ? Are you crazy? Nobody goes to that side! ‘Tis forbidden,
you fool!
Guard 1: But I heard!
Guard 2: That’s why you should not sleep during your duty hours! You fool! You were
dreaming!
Guard 1: Pardon me, Captain! I might be wrong!
Guard 2: Of course! Fool! Now go back to your position!
Guard 1: Aye aye Captain! (Guard 2 goes back to sleep)
Guard 1: Huh! Bloody old fool! He thinks he is smart? I will find this trespasser myself. Then
nobody can stop me from the Honor Medal! (To Captain, whispering) Sleep! You old fool!
Guard 2: (In his sleep) huh… what?

3SCRIPT FOR SKIT
Guard 1: (scared) Hail Supremo!
Guard 2: Yes yes! Hail Supremo! (Dozes off)
Guard 1 starts searching the area. Dramatic music plays in the background. Suddenly sees a
nearby bush moving. He crawls up to the bush to find a young girl, hiding behind.
Guard 1: Hey! STOP! DON’T MOVE!
Girl: Please don’t kill me! I am lost!
Guard 1: Huh! Liar! I don’t believe you. You were trying to enter the forbidden village. Huh!
Got You!
Girl: NO NO! Believe me! I was looking for my sheep! She ran away!
Guard 1: You think I am a fool? Come out or I’ll shoot you at once!
(The girl tries to run but the guard catches her)
Guard 1: (Shouts) You can’t take away my Honor Medal!
Guard 2: (Wakes up disheveled) Who? Where? What is going on?
Guard 1: Sir! I caught the trespasser!
Guard 2: Are you still dreaming? Fool?
Guard 1: (Exhausted) Believe me Captain! Here she is. I caught her red-handed from that bush
over there. (Brings forward the girl)
Guard 2: (shocked) I see! Pray, my fair Madame, is it true? You were going to the Forbidden
Village?

Girl: (Scared) I am lost! I lost my sheep! Please let me go!
Guard 1: Liar! I caught you myself! You WERE going to that deadly forbidden village!
Girl: What forbidden? I live in that village. I came here in search of my sheep!
Guard 1 & 2: YOU LIVE IN THE FORBIDDEN VILLAGE!!!!
Guard 2: Nobody lives in that village. It is forbidden!
Guard 1: This is disaster! This is unreal! She must be a GHOST!
Guard 2: (Composing himself) you are saying the truth, little lady?
Girl: Yes! And it is beautiful, not deadly! There are lots of trees, and mountains, and a river.
Guard 2: Ha ha ha ha! I have done it! A trespasser from the Forbidden Village! Now no one can
stop me from the Supreme Honor medal!
Guard 1: But Captain…
Guard 2: Shut up! Fool! Remember… you were off duty today. I caught this trespasser all by
myself! And you ever speak a word to a single soul, I will finish you! Remember?
Guard 1: (Painstakingly) Aye Aye Captain!
Guard 2: By the power vested in me by my Lord Supremo, I hereby arrest you!
(Guard 2 leaves with the girl)
Scene 3
Lieutenant’s office. Guard 2 waits with the girl.

Girl: Why have you arrested me?
Guard 2: Why do ask so many questions? Nobody is supposed to question the Group Captain!
Girl: But WHY?
Guard 2: There you go again! Because you are NOT supposed to! Because the law says so!
Girl: And why do you keep calling my village forbidden?
Guard 2: Because it IS Forbidden! Says the law!
Enters the Lieutenant. Guard 2 salutes him.
Guard 2: Hail Supremo!
Lieutenant! Hail Supremo! Now, what seems to be the matter, Group Captain?
Guard 2: I caught a terrorist single handedly!
Lieutenant: If it is the truth gentleman, then I would recommend you for the Honor Medal!
Girl: I am no terrorist! I lost my sheep!
Lieutenant: Oh! It is just a young girl!
Guard 2: She is dangerous. She is lying the whole time! She claims to live in the Forbidden
Village! See?
Girl: Yes I live in the village. My whole family, my friends live their too. Why would I lie?
Guard 2: Because, clearly no one lives there! We haven’t seen or heard anyone living there!
Lieutenant: Captain, let me do the talking. Tell me girl, who are you?

Girl: I am Rebecca. My sheep ran away while grazing. So I crossed this gate to find her. And
these men aren’t listening to me!
Lieutenant: Men? Who else was with you, captain?
Guard 2: Nobody Sir! She is lying again. I arrested this terrorist all by myself, putting myself in
great danger! I hope you remember to recommend me for the Supreme Honor Medal.
Girl: You are a liar! There was another soldier.
Lieutenant: Listen to me carefully, Captain! No one can know about this girl or her village. Not
even the villagers can know about her. If you hide something, tell me. I have to take action
accordingly.
Guard 2: But I thought nobody lives in the village!
Lieutenant: Oh! Forget it! Yes, no one lives there. Now you may go. I am taking this girl with
me to the Marshal! And remember, no one should know anything! Or else you are in danger!
Guard 2: But my recommendation?
Lieutenant: Consider your life to be your award! Now go!
Guard 2: This isn’t fair! I would complain to the Supremo!
Lieutenant: Haha! You think you have access to the Supremo? No one has reached there. Neither
did I. You fool! Go, it is an order. And remember, nothing happened today.
Guard 2: Aye aye Sir!

Scene 3
Lieutenant and Marshall are talking silently. The girl stands in a corner.
Marshall: We cannot just let her go back. Nobody should know about the village.
Lieutenant: I agree sir. But I doubt the Group Captain may tell somebody.
Marshall: Ah… Don’t worry! Nobody will believe him. The village has been kept secret for so
many years; people believe it is dreadful, and abandoned.
Lieutenant: Sir, if I may ask. I have also heard stories about the village in my childhood. What is
really there? Nobody can live in such a terrible, toxic place.
Girl: It’s not terrible. It’s beautiful! It has a river, and mountains.
Lieutenant: River? What river?
Marshall: Lieutenant, remember, you are not supposed to ask me any question. Oh, such
disobedience!
Lieutenant: But sir…
Marshall: Oh forget it. Now tell me. What should we do with this girl? If people found out about
her, it will be a disaster!
Girl: Please let me go. I want to see my mother.
Marshall: Listen, girl. Forget that you ever had a mother. Forget that you lived in the village.
You will be living here in the infirmary from now on. But if you ever tell anyone about the
village, or the river, you are dead!

Girl: But why? Why don’t you talk about the village? That’s my home.
Marshall: You have no home, no family. Your name is Missy, and you come from the suburbs.
Lieutenant: I think it is the best if we simply… You know…
Marshall: No, the Supremo is benevolent, and loving. By the power vested in me, I hereby give
you a new life, Missy!
Girl: (Firmly) My name is Rebecca.
Lieutenant: She is trouble, I tell you sir!
Girl: And you cannot make me a prisoner. I didn’t do anything wrong! It’s unfair.
Marshall: Only the Supremo says what is fair.
Girl: Then let me meet him, or her. Oh, who is this Supremo? Does this person even exist?
Silence. Mysterious music plays in the background. Then Marshall and Lieutenant laugh
together.
Lieutenant: I told you, she is trouble! She questions the Supremo! My goodness!
Girl: have you seen the Supremo, sir?
Marshall: No one has seen the Supremo. We just receive orders from the above. And the orders
say that you will be incarcerated for life if you do not stop asking question! God, this is why I
hate the villagers! They ask so many questions!
Lieutenant: I better take her to the infirmary.
Marshal: Yes, please! And I need to inform the headquarters about this. Oh, my head hurts.

Lieutenant: Sir, please remember to mention my name while reporting.
Marshal: Yes, of course. They should know that one more person knows about the river. (Shakes
his head)
Lieutenant: There exists a river????
Marshal: (Enraged) Stop asking questions, you fool! Yes, it does. And it is the only source of
fresh water for the Supremo and the officers. Do you think we drink the same filthy water that
you low-lifes do?
Lieutenant gasps in shock.
Marshal: And remember, if you tell a single soul what happened here today, I will ruin you.
Forget I told you anything, or else you are dead.
Marshal exits.
Girl: Where are you taking me now?
Lieutenant: Supposedly to the infirmary. But I was thinking, how does this river look like?
Girl: Oh, it’s beautiful. But you can see it only from a distance. It is surrounded by ugly fences
now.
Lieutenant: Listen girl, I want to see this river. Can you take me?
Girl: (looks square in his eyes) And I want to see the Supremo. Can you show me?
They freeze. Scene cuts. Enters the narrator playing his instrument. He roams around without
looking at the audience.

Narrator: (Suddenly to the audience) What? You expect me to say something? Oh I can’t. I don’t
even remember. Well, they did order me not to say a single word, you see? But YOU are free,
right? Go search for the Supremo, or the river. You are free to choose! Ha ha!
(Exits playing his instrument. Scene ends.)
