1SDLC IN HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
1. Stages of SDLC
Solution: There are 7 stages given below (de Vasconcelos et al., 2017).
Planning- The scope of the problem and its solutions is determined.
System analysis and requirements- The functional requirements of the proposed project and its
solutions is analyzed to meet the organization expectation.
System design- The specifications, features and necessary operations are described.
Development- The development of the proposed project begins in this stage.
Integration and Testing- The testing is done to ensure that the system meets the business goals.
Implementation- The production is done by moving data from old system to new system.
Operations and Maintenance- The additional requirements or capabilities are added to boost
the performance.
2. Stage of any information system (or EHR)
Solution: The stage of any information system in current scenario can be described by
analyzing the process of project from planning phase to operations and maintenance phase. The
project is described according to its process steps in which it works differently at each phase of
SDLC.
3. Information systems for each SDLC categories
Solution: The examples are given below

4. Role of HIM in each stage of the SDLC
Solution: Role played by HIM in SDLC stages.
Planning- The planning is done by Functional Manager in HIM. He proposes the formal
planning processes for the desired project for management.
System analysis and requirements- The planning is done by system analyst to analyze the
requirement of system’s functions and how it will be accomplished.
System design- The system is designed by the information technology department in healthcare.
Development- The development processes with the requirements taken into account for the
healthcare industry.
Integration and Testing- The Quality Assurance Manager does testing of developed project to
check whether it is working or not.

Implementation- The implementation is done finally for the working environment of healthcare
organization.
Operations and Maintenance- The additional requirements are then added to the project
according to the need.
5. Preparation for the obsolescence of EHR
Solution: Preparation for making EHR obsolescence is determined through below
obsolescence (Adler-Milstein et al., 2015).
Physical- The EHR is defined as active or inactive. This shows that record of patients visited in
past and is less likely to visit in present are considered as inactive. However, current patient’s
records are considered active. Hence, the obsolescence is related to age/life.
Functional- The EHR becomes obsolescence if any software system becomes outdated and the
outdated system does not support the recorded data. This makes the data less valuable.
Economic- The economic factor also makes EHR obsolescence due to high cost of EHR and
regulatory changes in EHR operation.
6. Use of SDLC for choosing a new EHR or new Health IT application
Solution: Choosing of new EHR through SDLC stages.
Planning- The planning of EHR is done in this stage to identify the constraints (cost and
resources) to implement EHR.
System analysis and requirements- The EHR is analyzed for feasibility in the healthcare work
environment.
