movement as taking rest is necessity of every tourist on
tour.
 The accommodation sector includes hotels, motels, lodges ,
resorts and others .
 This presentation discusses about the security threats
associated with the accommodation sector (AlBattat and
Mat Som 2013).
 The presentations provides action based solution to mitigate
breach of security associated with accommodation sector.

 There have been many incident in the
recent years which involved breach of
security in the accommodation industry .
 One such incident involved a criminal
activity that took place in Las Vegas
Strip ,Nevada, US.
 The catastrophic incident took lives of 58
people and lead to injury of 851 people .

QUESTIONS ABOUT HOTEL SAFETY AND
SECURITY RAISED BY THE INCIDENT

 The security and safety of the visitors in the
accommodation sector is of utmost importance.
 Due to several incidents of security breach in the
accommodation industry the hotel occupancy rates have
dropped down drastically (Baker 2014).If proper
measures are not taken it is expected to drop down even
more in the future considering the historically slower
growth of the foreign arrivals .
 It has become a necessity to project a business-as-usual
image and ensure tighter security measures are
undertaken by the government.
POSSIBLE IMPACT OF SECURITY
BREACH IN ACCOMODATION SECTOR

 If the guests encounter security issues in a hotel they
would prefer to stay in some other hotel incurring loss
to the hotel.
 On the other hand if no issues of security are faced by
the visitor and they feel safe ,it would lead to guest
satisfaction and goodwill of the customers will result in
goodwill of the hotel. Guest satisfaction leads to profit
maximization (Berezan, Raab, Yoo and Love 2013).
 Safe and secure environments for visitors is a
determinant for the success and failure of a hotel.
IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY AND SECURITY
IN ACCOMODATION INDUSTRY

 The incidents like Las Vegas shooting raise serious security
concerns related to accommodation sector .
 These incidents have negative impacts in the growth of
accommodation industry .
 The management of the accommodation services should
undertake action based solutions in order to prevent
incidents like Las Vegas shooting .
 Some of the action based solutions are installation of metal
detectors and baggage screening, changes in laws and
regulations and improvement of surveillance system of hotels
.
ACTION BASED SOLUTIONS

 Many hotels lacks the provision of some important security
devices like metal detectors and baggage screening .
 Devices like handheld and standing metal detectors are
electronic devices that detects the presence of metals nearby
like guns or any other weapons .Its is essential security device
for maintaining safety and security in hotels .
 Baggage screening is a procedure where the luggage of the
guests are electronically screened before they check-in the
hotel rooms (Turcsany, Mouton and Breckon, 2013) .
 The purpose of baggage screening is detection of weapons,
explosives ,dangerous articles and other dangerous devices .
INSTALLATION OF METAL DETECTORS
AND BAGGAGE SCREENING

 The gun laws in Nevada ,USA, where the Las Vegas shooting
incident occurred has one most relaxed gun laws in the
world .
 People can carry weapons in Nevada without any permit as it
is legal .The owners of the guns does not require any licenses
for their weapons (Wolfson, Teret, Azrael and Miller 2017) .
Even , possession of machine guns and semi automatic
weapons is legal in Nevada .
 The gun laws in Nevada needs to be changed and made more
stringent immediately, so all the possessors of weapons are
registered and possession of weapons, which caused severe
incidents like Las Vegas shooting ,is made a difficult affair .
CHANGES IN LAWS AND
REGULATIONS

 The surveillance systems present in hotels is not
sufficient to maintain safety and security in hotels .
 The surveillance system in hotels should be more
updated and improved in order to provide better
security to the hotels .
 They should review their security procedures and
system .The management of the hotels must
ensure that the they offer comprehensive
surveillance system in hotels with the latest
technological sophistications .
IMPROVEMENT OF SURVEILLANCE
SYSTEMS OF HOTELS

 Security in accommodation industry is
considered a major concern for the visitors
staying at the hotel .
 All the hotel should undertake security and
safety measures irrespective of their size and
level of security .
 They should undertake proper security measures
to prevent incidents like Las Vegas mass
shooting incident from Mandalay Bay hotel .
