1SELECTION CRITERIA FOR NURSES
SELECTION CRITERIA
1. Dependable and self-reliant in dealing with elderly patients suffering from
chronic diseases
Most of the elderly people are nowadays suffering from Asthma. It is one the most
common chronic diseases that needs extensive care of the patient, especially during
asthma attacks. While I was pursuing my nursing career, I used to visit my
grandmother’s house during the vacations. My grandmother is herself an asthma
patient, who has experienced several asthma attacks in the last few months. This was
my opportunity use my nursing skills to address to her needs. I used to keep her away
from the things that triggers asthma the most such as pet animals, tobacco smoke,
pollens, dust, emotional stress and also from certain medicines such as aspirin. In
regard to these restrictions, I noticed that the asthma attack rates have lowered to a
significant level than before. As many people are unaware of the necessary
precautions, the same was applied to the other elderly people residing in the same
locality who were suffering from asthma. This initiative helped in bringing impressive
results as those elderly people started experiencing lower frequency of attacks. These
precautions not only helped the elderly people in providing a sense of relief but also
enhanced my practical knowledge in my field of expertise.
2. Proficient in time management know-how and compelling with challenging
deadlines
Time is a very precious element in our daily life. I have managed to explore my time
management abilities and compelling with challenging deadlines through my training
and internship. As I was in the final phase of my training, I was assigned for my
internship sidewise where I had to appear for the sectional exams as well as complete

my assignments within the given timeline and also carry on my internship as it was
also a part of the nursing course. In order to efficiently manage such limited time, I
divided the total time span according to each section of the assignments so that the
assignments could be submitted within the given timeframe. I mostly used to work on
my assignments when the patient flow was comparatively less so that I do not have to
take leaves from my job. This helped me in completing my assignments on time and
utilizing the free time as well. By working in a flexible job role, I was potent enough
to manage my time in an effective manner and also meeting the deadlines with a
favorable outcome.
3. Capable of identifying social issues and conceiving solutions towards the
issue
Nowadays, social issues are very prominent in our society. As healthcare
professionals, we were trained to study the psychological state of mind of the people,
especially the elderly class as they are the most confined people in the society. Being
part of the job, I interacted with most of the elderly people to find out why they were
not able to socialize much. After interacting, I discovered that these people are mostly
neglected by the members of the house and also do not find appropriate environment
to interact with rest of the people. In order to help the elderly people interact more, I
created a group of elderly people who could feel involved, share moments from the
past, play indoor games in the community hall of the society. This idea helped me to
generate further ideas of social interactions to remove the age barriers and social
conflicts. These changes helped in changing the emotional state of the elderly people
and focus on social interaction approaches.
