Self-Identity Reflection
My current identity has really been influenced by the multiple identities that I have
developed up to today. When I came to this country I have since been influenced by the multiple
identities that I have developed over time. This means that I have to uphold my Nigerian identity
and at the same time work with the new identity that will allow me to blend with the new people
in the new environment.
To work with the community partners well, my identity is important since it assists me to
deal with the different issues in the work environment. The knowledge that I have developed in
the past and the level of identity that I have has changed my view of community services. As an
individual, I have developed my identity around offering assistance and alleviating the needs that
people have and improving their conditions. This means that the way I perceive others is
important and determines the way I relate with the people that I work with. Identity is the way
people view me and the way I express or present myself to them. I have to admit that my identity
has developed over time while volunteering in my local church back in Nigeria, and at the same
time, the effective communication skills in different workplaces that I have worked in have
increased my level of knowledge within different work environments.
My identity has also oriented me well when dealing with different work situations and
people. I have come to learn that in community services, interaction and collaboration with
people is an important element. This is through the application of people’s skills that enable me
to relate well with other people and at the same time develop good work relationships. The
people’s skills are important in team collaboration which is different from the competition. This
means that when working in a team environment differences between the people are not used to
define the collaboration that they have but rather the relationships that are based on

accommodating the identities and elements that each one has. This sometimes challenges my
interaction with other people since I am supposed to interact with others by adjusting in a way
that reflects the situation that exists and the same time creates difficulty relating well with others.
Identity is an important element in the relationships with other people and how I relate to
them. Through understanding my identity, I am able to address personal limitations and the
challenges that affect my functioning within the work environment. This means that I have to
learn how my identity can be applied in creating effective working relationships with others.
This means that I work collaboratively with others and at the same time learn how to use my
identity to impress others and at the same time ensure that I relate and support the needs of
others. Through collaborative relationships, I am able to learn to learn the perspectives of other
and be able to blend the issues and ways that they use to deal with the way they align their
identity with the issues that they face in the society. In a work environment, I believe that people
with different identities come together and use the abilities that they have to improve their work
environment which leads to the best results within the work environment. By accommodating
others I will be able to improve my abilities since I learn from others and allow others to identify
my weaknesses thus developing ways of improving myself and being better. For example,
understanding the culture of the people that I relate with improves my abilities.
Therefore, self-identity is about learning and knowing oneself to the point that these
abilities can be used to improve the abilities that one has. In this sense, I will be able to improve
my ability by learning from others which ensures that I will be a better person who is able to
work with others and accommodating the abilities of others which certainly improves the work
environment and creates better abilities for me.
