1SELF AND PERCEPTION Date: Place: Time: Identificationofpersonalityandself-realisationforminourmindfromour adolescence.Fromthisperiod, westarttothinkabouttheuniquenessofdifferent personalities. It is the personality that distinguish one human being from another. Our family is the place from where we first learn that every different family member has different personal self. Personality of an individual is determined how he perceives the phenomenon around him and how he reacts on that circumstance. My personal self is determined by how I see the world and how the world sees me. Every different people I meet daily has different perspective and my presence is seen differently by each of them. These perceptions of myself on the eyes of others are never similar. However, my family and friends are vital to identify and form my self-perception because they have taught me to shape by belief, thoughts, values, interests and behaviour. I feel, my personality reflects my past, present as well as future. To me it is the situation I was in the past or the situation I will be in future will incur my response therefore, situation can be seen to be one of the major factor that change our behaviour. Now, behaviour is the reflection of what we see in our families. For example, in case of death of a close family member, the children of the family see how the other people are reacting on that situation. Therefore, with change of situation our response changes so also our perception. To my family and friends, I am very amiable and impressive character through very much interrogative. I like to lead or guide as well as help others when needed but do not feel to dominate or stress them to assign with my beliefs and values. This is because I feel everyone in this world is unique in their own way and have different perspectives. I am an
2SELF AND PERCEPTION open minded and acknowledge what is better. To my family, I am a shy person who has a small friend circle and satisfied with life. To my friend I am sympathetic yet short tempered. To them I am a good communicator and can express what I feel. These are the contrasting features that has made my personality different from others. In understanding the self, I must first judge the perception I have built since my childhood. There are some important factors that had helped me in defining my personality. As mentioned before, personality is a unique characteristic which is determined through our past roles, present feelings and future insight. We identify the factors in our environment and select the stimuli knowingly or unknowingly. Based on these stimuli we respond which sometimes led us to confusion. However, situational stimuli led us to react and we find a group of people having similar perception. Thus we have different culture and different beliefs. My awareness of who I am is developed when I start to communicate with the world outsideaswellaswithmyself.Throughtheinterpersonalinteraction,Iidentifymy perceptions, attitudes, ideas, imagesandinferences.Inadditiontothisinterpersonal interaction with my self helps me to realise my feelings, experiences, evaluations and interpreted my state of consciousness. Based on these factors my personality is built which is reflected through my decisions, communication as well as actions. My personality is not static but very flexible. It changes with the change of situation and the feedback we get from the others. Positive feedbacks from the family and friends gives us confidence about our belief and attitude whereas the negative one led us either to change of perception or unassertive reaction and avoidance. Asmentionedbefore, thepersonalityofapersonisreflectedthroughhis communication or action. After we mend or amend the personalities, we present ourselves to
3SELF AND PERCEPTION the world. It is done through communication or reaction that determine our exposure or disclosure. We judge others critically or empathetically so also our friends and family. Their feedbacks reveal whether we are argumentative, advocative, effective or impressive. Our perceptual errors led us to become stereotype thus unacceptable for the ever changing society. Therefore, it can be concluded that in case we fail to determine wat we are or what makes us different from the other, we will be in grave problem in life. Without proper understanding of personal self, we will never be able to nature unique beliefs and personality. This will lead us to be controlled by others in unproductive and undesirable ways.
