SELF REFLECTION ON COMMONWEALTH BANK OF AUSTRALIA1
Introduction
The managerial function has actively contributed to the productivity and outcomes of an
organization (Gilman, 2018). The growth of an organization depends on the measurement of the
changes that emerge and its abilities to manage the risk. The organizational structure and
characteristics influence the managers and constrain their strategy to make a decision. These
managers examine the management functions of the organization and play an essential role in
applying control and monitoring the risk indicators.
I am writing this essay to reflect upon my work experience at Commonwealth bank
Australia. I was working as an assistant manager there. During these days, I was fortunate
enough to learn the different sides of how to plan, develop and complete the work in a particular
period. Every stage was a learning step for me. I have worked with people from different culture,
gender or age. Each one has a unique role and responsibility towards the organization. In this
essay, I have analyzed how the organizational structure and characteristics of the Common
Wealth Bank influences the decision-making strategies of the managers. Through my experience
and observation, I have stated the strength and weakness according to me as well as others. I
have noted a few suggestions that will help the bank to overcome the situation.

Overview
I was working with a Common Wealth Bank of Australia. It is a multinational bank
operating in several countries in Australia, the United States, New Zealand, and the United
Kingdom. It is a public sector bank founded by the Australian Government in the year 1911
under the Commonwealth Bank Act. It had its first branch situated in Melbourne, Australia. For

a period of forty years, it served as the central bank of Australia from 1920 to 1960. In the year
1991, this bank was listed under the Australian Stock Exchange and in 1996, it was fully
privatized. Presently, this bank serves worldwide with much of its operations in the Asia-Pacific
Region. The Common Wealth Bank provides a wide range of financial services such as retail,
funds management, business, and institutional banking, investment, insurance, superannuation,
and booking services. It occupies the third position in companies listed under the Australian
Stock Exchange as of March 2018 (Chau, 2018). It is one of the central banks under the "big
four" category along with National Australian Bank (NAB), Australia and New Zealand Banking
Group (ANZ) and Westpac Banking Corporation operating in several countries worldwide. The
revenue generated by the bank in the financial year 2017 was AU $25,257 million, and in the
year 2018, it is AU $25,907 million (Commbank.com.au, 2018).
The Method of Research used
For carrying out the research work, I have shared my personal experience and the use of
some data available to me. These data occurs naturally via emails, conversations, regular
corporate artifacts, etc. I am using these digital data, as these are easily and quickly available in
many digital forms and types. It was very challenging to implement these naturally occurring
digital data in the research framework to analyze the study. The conversations and emails helped
me in identifying the descriptive methods the people in the bank used for interpreting the social
actions and practices that involve greetings, telling stories and giving directions within formal
and informal contexts. The corporate artifacts include the signs and symbols observed in the
unique culture of the bank such as the corporate legends and stories, physical layout and warm
greetings for the guests helped me analyzing the culture of the bank (Queen, 2017).

I have used the Segmented, Targeting and Positioning (STP) framework to analyze the
operating market and the customers of this organization. From my learnings, I have segmented it
into Australian as well as International clients. The citizens of Australia, international clients and
the businesses that require banking services are classified into the target group. I have positioned
it as the simple and effective service-providing public sector bank.
For designing the research framework, I have used the secondary data for the analysis
purpose. I have used several case studies and research theories as secondary data for collecting
the statistical information related to the structure of the company and its organizational behavior.
For understanding the management role and its varied operational activities, I have gathered
information through different corporate websites and official journals. I have proceeded with the
deductive research approach for making the research framework. I am using the proposed
theories and framework highlight the organizational structure. To analyze the collected
information, I have used qualitative data analysis. In the study, I have not chosen the inductive
research approach, as it discusses the new model or theories (Yin, 2017). For scientifically
developing the research, the positivism research philosophy is used by me, as it was more comfortable in
understanding the depth and issues of the study and its impact on the growth of the organization. The
descriptive research design is discussed briefly to follow the policies and structure of the Commonwealth
Bank.
Personal SWOT Analysis
The personal SWOT analysis is conducted for self-assessment and other's perception about me. I
am sharing my strength and weaknesses that identifies my progress growth rate of working in the
organization. The opportunities and threat will help in comparing myself with others for self-assessment
