Exploration of Sensory Materials in ASD
Children are often seen to make use of their senses to explore the world around
themselves as soon as they are born. As proposed by Wolfberg, DeWitt, Young & Nguyen
(2015), it is for the same reason we see children put things in their mouth to taste and feel the
texture. However, I feel that all children are successful in learning from their senses. It is for the
same reason; sensory play is important. I feel that sensory play is important in stimulating the
senses. Based on my personal perspective, I feel that sensory activities are often helpful for
individuals with ASD as it works on creating different sensory information and helping the brain
to create strong connects for responding to the sense based information (Szatmari, 2004)
From the individuals suffering from autism, it can be easily stated sensory activities can
help in stimulating them by establishing neural connections. In addition to that, I feel sensory
play works in a different way just to suit the needs of people suffering from ASD. The need for
sensory play can be justified through the statement as follows; individuals with ASD are over
sensitive under certain scenarios that means even a small amount of sensation is enough to
stimulate them. In similar regards, ASD individuals can be under sensitive to certain stimulation
and may fail to perceive the things around them (Green, Hernandez, Bookheimer & Dapretto,
2017). The sensory plays can help in understanding the fact which individual is sensitive to
which senses.
The module helped me in understanding the causes of trigger within the people suffering
from ASD. Thus, through the knowledge gained in the mentioned course I can obtain a clear idea
about the possible causes of trigger and even work on eliminating the possible causes of
behavioural issues among them. For one fact I do understand that there is no specific medication
