The book was first published in the year 1989. This book is based on self-help. The book
describes the importance of goal attainment according the ethics of one’s character. Covey
simplifies the demonstration with the example of simple fable of ‘the goose that laid golden
eggs’. Covey describes the notion of paradigm shift of different perspective of different people.
All the habits mentioned in this book intended to achieve individual independence.
The habits mentioned in this book are effective for each individual irrespective of the
profession. According to Covey, the seven habits an individual must possess are mentioned as
follows (Books, 2017).
Be proactive – It refers to the ability to take the responsibility of one’s own activity. It
requires constant review of the individual’s mission and vision. Clarification should be
there considering the position a person may achieve in near future.
First thing first – It is referring to the distinguishing elements between leadership and
management. According to this book, leadership speaks about differentiating the tasks
according to the urgency. Covey mentioned an order for determining the urgency of
tasks. The order is – urgent and important, not urgent but important, urgent but not
important, and not urgent and not important.
Begin with the end in mind – It is referring to having the vision to work in accordance
with the planned schedule. Focusing on the responses and initiate the activity with
constant expansion.

Think win win – it refers to possess an winning attitude for every assignment one
perform during the course of their profession.
First seek to understand, then to be understood – having empathetic nature for
understanding is a wise decision. It has a greater incorporation with Greek Philosophy
(Ethos, Pathos, and Logos).
Synergize – it refers to combining the strengths and provide a positive attitude for
teamwork.
Sharpen to view growth – It is the process to balance the resources within an individual.
It helps to create long term effect in the field of individual growth.

Jim Collins foreword the 25th anniversary edition of this book to give a tribute to Covey
family for the highly effective father. According to Jim Collin, Covey emphasized on the concept
of self-renewal in the field of leadership and creativity.
