Assessment
Conditions:
Each assessment criteria is recorded as either Satisfactory (S) or Not Yet Satisfactory (NYS). A
student can only achieve a ‘Satisfactory’ Assessment Outcome for the entire assessment when all
assessment Criteria listed below are ‘Satisfactory’. A student who is assessed as ‘Not Yet
Satisfactory’ is eligible for re-assessment with their trainer.
All assessment answers must be typed, include this assessment cover sheet and uploaded in
‘WORD’ version to moodle.

1.6. Identify and analyse the advanced skills, starts, dives, turns and finishes of
swimming to be developed

2. Brief participants. 2.1. Communicate instructions and relevant information about the
session and competition schedule in a manner appropriate to participants.

2.2. Encourage participants to seek clarification, information and feedback as
required during the session.

2.3. Inform participants of known and anticipated risks, safety procedures
and appropriate behaviour according to rules, policies and regulations and
accepted best practice.

2.4. Establish a suitable communication system to use while participating in
drills, activities and games.

3. Conduct swimming
sessions.
3.1. Advise procedures for dealing with emergency and non-routine
situations according to organisational policies and procedures.

3.2. Conduct warm-up and introductory activities.
3.3.Apply teaching and coaching techniques to impart required knowledge
and the requirements of competitive advanced swimming to be
developed.

3.4.Monitor individual participant's performance and maintain effective
3.5.Observe participant's skill execution during drills, activities and games,
and adjust or refine individual and group technique as required.

3.6. Allow time for cooling down at the end of the session and inform
participants of opportunities to further develop the advanced skills of
competitive swimming.

4.Complete post-

4.1.Provide opportunities for participants to identify their personal progress
and satisfaction with the session and give feedback as required

4.2. Evaluate relevant aspects of the session and determine the level of
learning achieved

4.3.Identify potential areas of improvement for future competitive swimming
sessions.

Part A
One of the requirements of this Observation is for students to fill-out the below swimming session
template plan, this is crucial aspect of the observation, by completing this students will have clear
picture of how to instruct/coach a swimming squad/group and better understand the importance of
putting a session plan together as this is a vital tool for a swimming coach.
You will need to coach the drills that your Trainer/Coach has taught throughout the term, or you can
use other swimming drills from swimming resources from web-links. However try to keep the drills
that you are using to demonstrate easy and clear to follow and the resources you use are using are
verified links, that are specific to swimming and not people who are not in the profession of
coaching drills. Links like Speedo are a great resource.
PRACTICAL OBESERVATION ASSESSMENT.Students will need to demonstrate and put together a session plan that includes turns, finishes,
dives, or any four swimming strokes, remembering you will also need to put the participants in
levels of how well they master the activity and monitor their performance.
You have 10mins to coach the session, use the other remaining students as participants.
Also think of various drills and equipment/aids that will help improve the participant’s
technique/stoke to improve on the activity.
*Please fill-out the template as this will be part of the observation, as it will be your tool to
take the lesson, it will be marked. The swimming template is at the bottom of this form
*If you feel a student is not C in one of the sections please orally assess the student.
