TASK 1
Feeding a client with meal
Introduction to the client: I am working with John Green, who is 75-year-old patient
suffering from leukaemia. He also has a medical history of diabetes and high blood pressure.
Patient is too weak and requires assistance even in feeding. He has been admitted to intense care
unit from past 7 days. Patient is having problem in feeding, he cannot walk and even cannot sit.
Preparation for feeding client: There are some of the basic items which will be necessary
for feeding client. Nasogastric tubes can be used to feed service users who are being admitted in
intensive care unit. The other method that can be used to feed Mr. John is intravenous feeding, it
means patient is provided with nutrition through the stomach. The dependent patient who does
not require enteral or parenteral feeding may still need help with eating. To feed client with meal,
it is essential for care worker to be patient and attentive. They must allow service user to have a
drink between each bite nurse has given in his/her mouth. While feeding nurse must make sure
that patient is eating in a position which is comfortable to them. After eating the service users
must not sleep and kept seated for at least 15 minutes (Jukic and et.al., 2017). It is really
necessary that health care professionals must be engaged in taking consent from service users.
Consent must be taken in written as it is really important for service users safety and security.
Level of assistance: The level of assistance which is being required by Mr. John will be
known by health care professional through liaising with nurse and reading the care plan.
Equipment Required: In order to provide acute care in Intensive care unit, it is really
necessary for health care professionals to make use of certain equipment’s includes feeding
pump, nasojejunal tube, PEG tube and others.
Good infection control practice: I will take care of patient hand hygiene and will make
sure that my hands are also clean before I get engaged with feeding service user.
Effective communication with Client: While feeding patient effective communication
must lay between care worker and patients, Nurses must motivate them to have healthy diet, they
must be engaged in asking questions about the problems they are facing in care.
Rationale for intervention: Various interventions will be taken in order to provide Mr.
John with acute care like limiting the visitor, making sure that they have proper diet. Making use
of good hand washing material to all visitors.
