Impacts of slave history on the American society 2
It was during the 16th century that the first slaves arrived in the United States,
specifically in Virginia. Dutch traders had taken them from a Spanish ship that they had
captured in the sea. The African slavery who proved cheaper gave productive labor to the
settlers in the English colony. Since these times of slavery, there has remained an unending
impact in the society as a result of the slavery. Many people especially the blacks who
worked as slaves were deprived of the human dignity and isolated them from the rest of the
people. This becomes a basis for many indifferences between the White Native Americans
and the black Americans today. The society has since been deprived of its sense for
universal equality for all human beings (Horton & Horton, 2011).
During the slavery periods, many of those involved as slave servants developed
wild and opposite mindsets against the whites. These issues have since been an area of
disagreements especially due to the created enmity that encroaches the society with
disagreements and misunderstandings. It is evident that many societal settings and
communities in America are as a result of these created perspectives. In the American
society, religious groups, political affiliations, and perspectives get integrated into racial
classifications. Since slavery was against the principle of Liberty that founded the nation,
it was evident that issues related to it were unpleasant and to the detriment of the society.
This history of slavery hence creates memories of pain and sadness due to the past that
brings these effects even to the present society. In the 18th century, Abraham Lincoln, the
then president of the United States issued the emancipation of proclamation which later led
to a civil war (Foner, 2013). This principle brought a limited practice of slavery. It is
unfortunate that the slave who arrived in Virginia as indentured servants would later end up
as permanent slaves.
