Executive Summary
The aim of the paper is to demonstrate the networking system of a smart home and the
elaborate the risks associated with it. The paper emphasizes in developing a network
system within a smart home and the devices in it by establishing an authenticated
wireless network. The introduction highlights the concept of a smart home, its primary
components along with its advantages and disadvantages. Moving on, the paper
discusses the ethical implications of using the wireless network and the ways to
overcome it. The discussion part of the paper gives an overview of the design,
implementation and, testing of the smart home network by the usage of the ‘Cisco Packet
Tracker’ software. Snapshots are given to provide an elaborate view of all the steps done
in the Testing section of the paper. The paper concludes by discussing the summary of
the paper and analyzing the network system of the smart home.

Introduction
With the emergence of the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), the
development of smart homes is a common factor nowadays. Smart homes are equipped
with various smart devices, which are interconnected through wireless networks
providing the members of the house better living experience. These smart devices may
include home appliances like refrigerator, washing machines, lighting systems like lamps,
bulbs, or any other devices like television, home speakers and so on. The primary
components for the functionality of these smart devices are sensors, connectivity,
software, and a user interface [1]. The purpose of the smart home is to provide comfort,
security, better monitoring of the house and ensured maintenance.
Though there are ample advantages in staying in a smart home, there are many
disadvantages too. Firstly, there is a risk of data mishandling in these automated
systems. A smart hacker can hack these systems and get confidential data of the people
living in the house. Secondly, access threats happen when the owner may forget the
password or the battery of the house may run out of charge [11]. These smart homes fail
to function during natural calamities like floods or earthquakes proving to be risky for our
life.
Discussion
Ethical Implications of WLan
The ethical implications of using WLan network mainly focuses on two points-
confidentiality of the data and competence in the establishment of the network [12]. The
usage of WLan, popularly known as Wide Local Area Network has increased in many
corporate areas, public places and in smart homes too to ensure the exchange of data
and communication amongst the devices. WLans provide the users to access the internet
while moving around places rather than being static and sitting at a fixed place. It is
simple and easy to use WLans within a certain range of area of network without any
wired communication. The mechanism of WLans is to send data to the receiver through
radio waves. Anybody using a radio receiver and is within that range of network can
access the data in an unauthorized manner which leads to the rising of the issue of
privacy and security of data. With increased number of WLan users in this era, the
security of data is at stake. Since nobody can control the communication medium in
