Modern Computer Systems: Smartphones and Tablets
Introduction
This report is based on an evolved era with all of the great advances in computer technology
which have been implemented in the past few decades. A computer system typically consists
of hardware, operating system, system programs and application programs. In this context,
Smartphone is also a kind of computer system which has considerably brought revolution in
the recent innovative technology field. Smartphones and Tablets (herein after referred as
SAT) can be utilised for distinct useful purposes. For instance, tablets are the media machines
which are used for entertainment and playing games. SATs can be used for communication as
well as task-oriented activities (Szekely et al., 2013). Besides, SATs may or may not run on
the same operating systems and apps, hence this is the field where the similarities amid above
two end. However, there are some critical disadvantages of the SAT which can certainly
obstruct the growth and revolution in the society caused by them (Islam & Want, 2014).
In this way, this paper will discuss and demonstrate general as well as in-depth understanding
about the selected computer system which is SAT here. Finally, with the future trends of the
SATs recommendations will be provided for the readers of this journal.
A general discussion of the Smartphones and Tablets
Smartphone is a type of mobile phone that works on a mobile operating system own advance
computer capability as well as connectivity than a featured phone. On account for the
capabilities and technology of SAT, they have brought a significant change in the modern
world and we all human beings have become dependent on them (Hasan & Yu, 2017). The
reason behind our dependency over SAT is that they can perform and handle our daily tasks
well. For instance, remembering major dates, schedules, tasks and setting reminders can
easily be performed by our phones now. Hence, SATs have created a major effect on the
human way of living. It means that SATs have transformed our life better, simpler as well as
everyone can stay connected to their loved ones with no considerable cost which makes
people happy.
Smartphones are the devices which are assembled on mobile hardware with selected
operating systems like iOS, android in order to fulfil the requirements of this era’s mobile

users. In recent years, new devices known as tablets have arisen as devices which can offer
and implement perfect balance amid smartphones and laptops. Thus, a tablet can be well-
defined as a portable notebook which is created based on a smartphone operating system
platform. As we all know that Smartphone Revolution (SR) has entirely changed the personal
communication techniques in the present era. SAT revolution has evolved the way how
personal communications used to take place. Besides, with the fresh launch of smartphones
provided with cutting-edge technology, the competition is now more violent. The increased
use of SAT can be easily seen by mobile traffic which is used to recognize customer mobile
behaviour. Besides, different mobile apps generate different amounts of traffic and it is
important to know how much time we are spending on each mobile app (Szekely et al.,
2013).
Around the world, undoubtedly people have become completely addicted to their
smartphones. It is now well-aware that people in public gatherings, functions and meets often
seen indulged into their smartphones, while unaware of the physical environment around
them. Moreover, the smartphone craze is popular in Nigeria also, as the region has been
declared as one of the biggest mobile internet users worldwide (Datta et al., 2012).
SATs are famous and trending now a days but the major focus of this paper is on how we can
harness best benefits of the technological innovation of SAT so that global people can
leverage benefits of recent technology rather than being targeted from the cons of them. In
this context, SATs are being popular and people are getting addicted in exponential number
which is quite obvious because of the benefits, ease and entertainment they offer to people.
On the other hand, human can utilise the benefits of SATs in many areas like education,
medical research, engineering research, management and studies, prevention from crime and
many more (Islam & Want, 2014). The major requirement of implementation of SAT
technology into above areas is the human awareness regarding the opportunities they own
while using these devices.
Application of Smart Phones
From the perspective of detailed discussion over SAT, it is very much important to know the
thought-provoking history of the unique invention that has modernized our planet. First
mobile phone invented in the decade 1970 through an engineer who was working in Motorola
Company (Islam & Want, 2014). The inventor did not even know that the whole world would

be appreciating his invention to a large extent. Besides, the term smartphone was firstly used
by the company Ericsson in the year 1997 (Szekely et al., 2013). The major difference among
mobile phone and smart phone is that in SATs advance application programming interfaces
(APIs) and the personal digital assistance (PDA) is being utilized. Moreover, the smartphones
we are using presently has also gone through many evolutionary phases which have created
its significance more essential and relevant (Islam & Want, 2014).
In this way, mobile phones and laptops which have been evolved into smartphones and
tablets respectively will get again transformed into other more advanced devices with the
help of innovative computer technologies. However, SAT’s novel benefits can only be
utilised for welfare of the human society when we all will decide and implement the positive
extraction of the technological resources for our overall development. For an example, now
days a 3 year old kid has no heart touching memories of their childhood but they own
childhood memories majorly related to the smartphones and tablets as they play games on
SATs rather than on ground, nature and parks. Otherwise, SAT trend and revolution will
negatively harness human beings’ capabilities, time and career (Szekely et al., 2013). Thus,
SATs invention and up gradation must be utilised for bringing positive change into the
society and technology as well.
In order to understand the application of SAT, there are numerous ways and areas where we
can observe and see the extraordinary applications of the SAT. The SATs can install third-
party applications as well as they have enhanced and better integration with the operating
system of the devices and hardware than rest feature phones. Applications of SAT can also be
explained through types of operating system like Symbian (discontinued), Window Mobie
(replaced through windows phone), Android (most famous), Blackberry and iOS (Hasan &
Yu, 2017).
Presently, the evolutionary world has taken over through smartphones. For instance, iOS and
android are the key leads of the smart phones followed by the windows phone. Moreover,
over 90% of the global mobile market is governed by smartphones as they are much reliable
as well as easier to use. Out of those 90% mobile phone users, 45% are android users and 40
% are iOS users and rest are other operating systems. SATs utilise User Interface (UI) that
makes each and every task easier for their users (Datta et al., 2012).

Future Trends of the Smart phones
Future trends of the smart phones and tablets are being predicted by the technologists like the
smart phones of the future will require high network connectivity and hence 5G network band
will be trending in future. Wearable devices, mobile-connected smart objects, IoT, M-
Commerce, location and motion sensing, innovative mobile user experience design,
application performance management and enterprise mobile management will be major part
of the future trends of the smart phones and tablets (Islam & Want, 2014).
Moreover, our millennial mobile user desire more advanced technology in SATs which will
further introduce augmented reality, flexible screens, seamless voice control, in-built
projector, 3-D screens and holograms in the upcoming future of smartphones and tablets
(Hasan & Yu, 2017).
There are some key features of both smartphones and tablets which distinguish them from the
rest featured phones and hence these must have features will enable SATs to conquer the
each and every area of human development in future. Those must have features of SATs are
as follows:
 Long-lasting Battery
 Crystal clear super HD display
 AI enabled techniques based
 Warp-speed processor
 A fabulous camera
 Near Field Communications (NFC)
 Good storage space
 Multiple windows during functioning
 Fingerprint sensor and eye-retina scanner
 IR (Infrared) remote control
 Wireless and dash charging (Poh, 2018).

In conclusion, the revolution caused by smartphones and tablets has been inspected from the
perspective of pros, cons and future trends of the SAT for the global human society.
Smartphones’ basic features, history, usefulness, positive attributes, negative aspects and
future scope for the diverse fields have been discussed in detail. From the above detailed

discussion about SAT, it can be concluded that SATs are in trend and the trend will go further
high because of the newly made inventions in the field of modern SAT. Finally, smartphones
and tablets can be used to optimize human’s shortcomings or limitations at present as well as
in future so that human kind can conquer each and every field of their overall development
with the help of novel technology.
