INTRODUCTION
Smoking seems to be very common in young adults in modern era. Adults of young age
or teens suppose smoking as a symbol of being cool and to exhibit modern attitude among peers.
Children are more likely to fall for smoking when their parents smoke and attitude of parents
towards smoking is also a significant factor. Teenage exposure at smoking have negative and
lasting effects on brain development at adolescent stage (Hedman and et. al., 2018). It causes
health problems like short breathing, retard growth and brain development, reduce stamina,
deplete lung cells, early cardiovascular damage. Main reason of teens moving towards the habit
of smoking is to getting relief from stress. Even young adults are too much stress and depressed
in today's fast life. This causes them stress because of their tough study schedules, relationship
problems, sometimes family matters, so they prefer to start smoking as nicotine activates the
pleasure areas of the brain and give an relieving sensation.
OVERVIEW
The proportion of young adults who prefer to smoke in Great Britain (UK) was recorded
to be 14.5% in 2020, that is less than 2019. This downfall in smoker's graph seems to be decrease
continuously since 1974. Adolescent smoking is the largest issue in today's era. According to a
survey, nearly 90% of adults start smoking at teen age without the intention of getting hooked.
According to the records of American Lung Association, it is reported that each day approx 6000
children smoke their first cigarette under the age of 18. Among the, almost 2000 prefer to
become regular smokers. A recent survey exposed that among current smokers under 18 years of
age, 69.4% young smokers has never being for the legal age proof when purchasing cigarette
and 62.4% were not like to consider age and refuse smoking. Addiction of smoking effects
individual in both aspects that is, physically and psychologically (Dugral and Balkanci 2019).
Short term effects of smoking includes; Cough, Bad breath, Shortness of breath, Fatigue,
Reduced senses of teste and smell.
Long term effects of smoking are: Vision loss, Dental problems, Hearing loss, Cancer, Diabetes,
Infections, Breathing problems and chronic respiratory conditions.
Range of measures and policies framed by government to prevent smoking among the population
by:
Implementing total ban on tobacco promotion and advertisements
