Social Entrepreneurship 1
Introduction
Social entrepreneurship is considered as the sustainable business model that provides the
opportunity to elevate the economic, social and environmental problems faced by the
community. It is analyzed that youth unemployment and the stagnation of the economy is the
major problem suffered by the population of Egypt (Dees 34-42).
In response to the above issues faced by the country, it has focused on the development of
various social entrepreneur projects that provide the employment opportunities and improves
the living standard of the underprivileged society. The projects focus on reducing the
financial burden and promoting the growth of the underprivileged community (Haugh, Helen
and Talwar643-658). The further paragraphs of the report will reflect upon two social
entrepreneur projects and their impact on society. It will also cover the recommendations to
maximize the impact of the projects upon society.
Alashanek Ya balady
This project started in the year 2002 with the aim of elevating poverty and embraces human
dignity. It focuses on creating opportunities for the youth and enhancing the living standards
of the less fortunate community. It started at American University in Cairo where hundreds of
students shared their skills and values. In the year 2005, it started its learning process and
developed the first economic empowerment model where the training was provided to
empower all the family members to improve their living. The company focuses on
developing social entrepreneurs in the universities to lead and train the underprivileged
section of the society. It currently has 12 franchises in the universities of Egypt. Under the
franchise system of the project, it allows the maximum participation of the youth and does
not interfere in the programs of the franchise (Alashanek Ya balady)

AYB-SD delivers its services through four programs under which it focuses on eradicating
the problem of unemployment and empowers the underprivileged people through providing
financial and social support. It provides the training to enhance the skills and the
competencies of the people to access the job market and provides microloans to help the
people in growing their business and reduce the financial burden on them (Ebrashi, Raghda,
and Darrag 325-346).
The vision of the association is to develop economically independent society by engaging the
youth and focusing on sustainable development of the country. It collectively focuses on
bringing social change and cooperation of the members for the greater good. The associates
achieve the vision by respecting all the members and believe in the accomplishment of the
dreams (Hockerts 105-130).
It is analyzed that 69% of the unemployed population in Egypt constitutes the youth i.e. from
the age of 15-29 and out of the 82% held diploma and university degree. To resolve this
problem the association decided to enhance the skills of the youth to create demand in the
market (Alashanek Ya balady)
Educate Me
This is another registered Egyptian non-profit organization that focuses on redefining
education through the development of a skill-based and learner-centered model that aims to
make the children grow into self-actualize lifelong learners. The foundation has a preschool
in Talbeya, Haram and also operates government certified community school where it has
developed an integrated professional development program for training the staff members of
the public school. The foundation has trained 2500 school teachers and staff members in 93
public schools across 6 governorates in the year 2016 (Educate Me).
