Problems associated with
Snapchat
Imagine the public knowing where a kid or
an adult is at all times. Even when such kid
or adult is not aware of the fact that their
location is being used by someone they not
even know exists, it would be happening.
This is what the new feature of Snapchat
would bring with it. A life of no privacy,
particularly with the public profiles, is the
gift of new Snapchat update. Eve when the
profile is private one, all the friends would
be able to track the location of a child (Field,
2017). This puts the safety of the child under
grave threat. And with predators lurking on
internet from across the globe, this threat is
amplified.
Insight into behaviour
SnapMap has been advertised as a location
sharing mode for the users. The consumers
indulge in such updates to keep their friends
updated on their social “extravagant” life
and to stay connected. Parents would want
this feature to be curbed as their child’s life
is put in danger (Sulleyman, 2017).
However, the children might oppose it as it
stops them from being social media savvy.
Their desires are for the world to know that
they are having fun. SnapMap can be
defended by young adults by stating that the
profiles can be kept private. However, the
perverts on internet are technically skilled to
tap in such profiles also. All this requires
immediate intervention of children and
young adults.
Strategic Decision
The SnapMap can be most effectively and
efficiently be used to target the young
individuals, who are not over the age of 18
and yet use Snapchat to stay updated and
connected with their friends. When such

individuals make use of SnapMap to tell
their friends about their location, they open
themselves to be a target of cyber bullying,
grooming, sexual exploitation and the like.
There is also the target group of young
adults, who too can be made a target of the
crimes identified above (Loughnane, 2017).
Intervention Strategy:
SMART
In order to ensure that the children and the
young adults are safe, there is an immediate
need to bring out measures to curb the
possible threat looming with the use of
SnapMap. This has been presented below
through SMART objectives.
S: Specific
Possible threats which loom SnapMap are
the young adults being put in danger and
being prone to instances of cyber bullying,
grooming, and sexual exploitation. There is
a need to curb the location tracking
particularly by the young adults, and to give
ghost mode control to the parents of those
under 18 years of age.
M: Measurable
When the ghost mode access is given to a
minimum of 70 parents out of each school in
UK, it would be deemed as a start of curbing
the threat posed by SnapMap.
A: Achievable
This can be attained by creating awareness
regarding the possible threats amongst both
parents and the young adults.
R: Relevant
In the digital media age, the chances of
cyber crimes particularly against vulnerable
young adults are high and this requires the
features like SnapMap to be disabled
(Huffington Post, 2017).
T: Time Limited
The progress of this objective would be
measured every month.
