Understanding the Purpose and Use of Social Work Supervision
Active participation as argued by Healy (2014), forms an important feature of social
work supervision. In fact, it is a core practice whose implementation is considered standard
for all social workers. What professional social work supervision aims to do essentially is to
enhance competence and professional skills of all social work practitioners. In doing so, it
strengthens the capabilities of social workers and enables them to achieve a positive outcome
for the people that they are working with (Healy, 2014). Manthorpe etal.(2013) state that
social work supervision at the professional level is an activity that engages social workers in
the process of ongoing professional learning. Consequently, it increases the capacity of each
and every social worker to respond in an effective manner to the ever changing and complex
practice environment. Social work supervision also leads to the retention of social service
workers in the type of organizations that support them and provide them with the resources
that they need to render ethical, accountable and quality services that are in keeping with the
visions, policies and goals of the organization (Manthorpe etal, 2013).
Core Values that Guide a Social Service Organization
Social work supervision is known to constitute an integral aspect of any
professional practice. As mentioned by Lee and Miller (2013), it is therefore absolutely
imperative for all social workers to carry out their duties in a way that these meet all the
ethical responsibilities that have been clearly specified in the Code of ethics. They need to
adhere to this code of ethics whenever they get involved in any supervisory process. There
are three core values pertaining to the practice of social work that have been well outlined in
the Code of Ethics (Lee & Miller, 2013). According to Reamer (2013), the first of these, is
respect for persons. The respect for other people is something that relates very easily to the
