Running Head: Social Work Supervision 2
Social work supervision
One of the challenges related to the practice of supervision is the role conflict and ambiguity.
Role conflict and ambiguity acts as the source of difficulties to the supervisor, (Campbell, 2013).
This hinders the nurturing of supervisees' professional development because the supervisee is
unsure of the expectations the supervisor has towards him/her. The supervisee has to play two or
more roles which may involve inconsistent behavior, for example, revealing personal
weaknesses and the possible inadequacies one has and at the same time, present themselves
competently to the supervisor for the purpose of passing the practicum.
Role conflict and ambiguity hinders the supervisee from giving the clients for they are instructed
by supervisors to behave in a manner that is against the supervisees' ethics and theoretical
beliefs. This makes them find role difficulties as they offer care to their clients due to anxiety
from work and supervisory dissatisfaction.
As a supervisor, I would ensure excellent supervision by offering clear statements on my
expectations during supervision through a supervision contract, (Johnson, 2017). A supervision
contract shall establish a good supervisor – supervisee relationship because the responsibilities of
all the parties are well stated, the expectations for supervisee stated and how his/her performance
shall be evaluated, (Bernard & Goodyear, 2013). Through role induction, I can help ensure
clients receive excellent care. This is because, through the supervision model, the supervisees are
able to clearly conceptualize supervision and willingly reveal their concerns to supervisors. This
reduces work anxiety for the supervisees are trained towards their role, Anxiety is reduced by
induction workshops during the role induction process. This rationale can make them ensure
quality services to their clients especially by revealing the client's information about them or
their treatment.
