Post-Colonial Condition of Egypt

This research report focuses on the post-colonial condition of Egypt, including the impact of poverty and unemployment. It discusses the socio-economic factors and causes of poverty in Egypt, as well as the decline in tourism and inflation since the revolution in 2011. The report also explores the role of corruption, lack of proper employment opportunities, and inadequate education system in contributing to the socio-economic challenges faced by Egypt. Introduction
The selected country for this research report is Egypt which was colonized by the
British in the year 1882. Egypt was occupied by the British after the Anglo-Egyptian War and
until the year 1956 where they withdrew the forces after signing Suez Crisis (Tignor, 2015).
The geography of Egypt is characterized by features of two regions i.e. North Africa and
Southwest Asia. The country is adorned with Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea and the
magnificent River Nile. Libya lies in the west of Egypt, Israel lies in the northeast, Sudan in
the East. Western Desert covers around two-third of the entire land of Egypt (Ministry of
Petroleum, 2010). With regard to the demographic characteristics of Egypt, it can be stated
that it is the second most populous country situated in the Middle East. The three most-
populous and habituated cities in Egypt are Cairo, Alexandria and places along the Nile
Delta. Majority of inhabitants of Egypt are Muslim (around 90%) and 10% are Christians.
There exists notable amount of immigrants from countries such as Greece, Italy,
United States, Canada, Australia etc. for temporary professional purposes. Population growth
rate of Egypt is around 1.75% (as recorded in 2006 est.). Life expectancy of male and female
population of Egypt are 68.77 years and 73.93 years respectively. The current socio-economic
condition of Egypt is characterized by forecasts of real GDP to grow by approximately 5% in
FY18 and also enhance by around 5.8% by FY20 (World Population Review, 2018). Such
growth is predictable to be driven by factors such as investment and private consumption
along with gradual pickup in gas and tourism. Additionally, extreme poverty is practically
eliminated in Egypt. The natural resources of Egypt comprises of natural agricultural
products such as papyrus, cotton, grain etc.

The central research problem statement concentrates on understanding the socio-
economic condition of Egypt post-colonial times and impact of poverty and unemployment.

Analysis and Discussion
In reference to the above-mentioned the research problem, it can be offered in the
discussion that massive inflation as well as sharp decline in tourism since the year 2011 due
to revolution can be considered as a major cause. In this concern, it can be additionally stated
that poverty in the country has been a growing issue post the colonial period leading to major
political and economic instability. The fundamental causes of poverty can be contributed
towards lack of proper employment opportunities, corruption at the government level, and
also inadequate system of education. Such causes led to the Egyptian Revolution in 2011
against Hosni Mubarak. As under his presidency, poor wealth distribution and inequalities at
every level of the country’s economy from 1981to 2011 left around 50% of the nation below
the poverty line. The other reason can be stated that manipulation of state funds directly
affected economic development of the country leading to diversion of funds required for
development of by minister of housing or critical areas of Egypt (Bower, 2018).

For instance, the socio-economic condition post-colonial times declined due to
diversion of public funds Ahmed Al-Maghraby (housing minister) and Mohamed Mansour
(transport minister). Moreover, lack of proper transparency from the lower level to the upper
level in government structures and economic policies has led to corruption. A fundamental
cause of poverty and widespread unemployment in the country post the colonial period is
lack of proper education and related policies. As per UNICEF that around 3, 20,000 or 3%
children at the primary level not at all enrolled or dropped out in the year 2015. Due to lack
of understanding of significance of education has led to such situation. Utilising sociological
concepts on the factors causing poverty and its hindrance towards economic development
states that a major social change most the colonial period in the societal structure and
economic ordering under the reign of Hosni Mubarak in the later period can be contributed
towards the later period might can be considered as plausible reasons for the same. Thus,
theory of poverty can be contributed in support of the question structural and personal defect
in the course of development of the country. The poverty and employment condition of post-
colonial Egypt depicts structural failure at the governmental level (Borgen Magazine, 2017).
Conclusion
From the above-mentioned discussions, it can be stated that post-colonial condition of
Egypt has been declining at different fronts such as poverty and unemployment. Although,
there has been a slight improvement after the revolution in Egypt.
