The AASW Code of Ethics calls upon social workers to pursue systematically and cause
advocacy when it clearly declares that ‘the association advocates change to social systems and
structures that preserve inequalities and injustice'. There are certain limitations, however, that
hinder social workers in performing cause or systematic advocacy. Some of these challenges
and/or limitations are outlined below;
There are certain laws passed by the government that makes a social workers life difficult and
therefore brings about complications in their ability in performing cause and systematic
advocacy. Some of the laws that can hinder the ability of a social worker to perform its duties
and work in a special manner are the issue of privacy of client information (Andrews, Darnell,
McBride, Gehlert, 2013). Despite the fact that it’s a good thing, this really inhibits
communication between a client and a social worker. The information that the client.
Confidentiality provides that information that a client discloses to a social worker shall not be
disclosed to a third party without the prior knowledge of the client.
Stress is another issue that really hinders social workers ability to carry out their duties. Much
often social workers are often engaged with clients who are emotionally distressed. Some of
these clients endure so many complications in their lives. When a social worker interacts with
such people it becomes almost impossible for them not to become emotionally fatigued. Unlike
other areas of specialization, in this area of specialization, there is a really huge challenge in
managing a work-life balance (Lewis, Ratts, Paladino, Toporek, 2011).
The workload is another issue that often makes it not possible for social workers to perfume
cause as well as social advocacy. Social work is a very demanding profession that requires so
much commitment. In cases when so much work-load is combined with low pay, a person easily
