It is observed that there has always been a discrimination between the fair-skinned and
the dark-skinned residents on various factors. These factors tended to affect the mortality rates of
the concerned individuals as well. The major factors that have been affecting the overall
mortality rates of the individuals refer to the inequality in terms of the income and the
accessibility of the primary care physicians for the individuals. The researches that are
undertaken in the present-day society tend to highlight the relationships that exist within the
social factors and the mortality rates of the individuals.

In “The effect of primary care physician supply and income inequality on mortality
among blacks and whites in US metropolitan areas”, the authors Shi and Starfield (2001) shed
light on the impact of primary care physician accessibility and the inequality factors observed
within the income of fair-skinned individuals as compared to dark-skinned individuals on the
mortality rates of fair-skinned individuals as compared to dark-skinned individuals. The authors
of the article based their study on the data that was collected from over 273 metropolitan areas
within the territorial boundaries of the United States. The authors used the multivariate ecologic
analysis of the data that was presented in the 1990s. The results of the study stated that the
mortality of the fair-skinned people is highly influenced by the accessibility of the primary care
physicians and the inequality within the income of the concerned individuals. The inclusion of
