1SOCIOLOGY OBSERVATION
El Jacalito Restaurant
10110 Main St Lamont, CA 93241
12th February, 2020. 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm
I observed El Jacalito Restaurant at the most prime hours. It was during the lunch
break that I visited the restaurant. The weather was pleasant and the restaurant was warm due
to the large number of people coming and going for lunch. It is a family run restaurant and
serves authentic Mexican food. Their menu includes options like Enchiladas, Fajitas, burgers,
Tacos, salads, burritos and breakfast platters (Menu, 2020). The people that were having
lunch were mostly locals and workers. There were some families and tourists who came for a
snack. The food that they serve is particularly ethnic and home cooked.
My experience was quite interesting. I observed a few families, many couples and
some workers eating there. There was also a large crowd of local Mexican people as well
who seemed to be regulars of the restaurant. Due to the aromatic spices that were used for
Mexican food, the place smelled quite appetizing. The moment I entered the place, the smell
of Mexican spices attacked my nose. I ordered the basic food such as fajita and burger with
sides of slaw and fries. All the food was tasty and that was also obvious from the way people
were ordering food. Among the people different kind of relationship and social exchange
could be seen. People were passing condiments to each other, sharing food from single plate
and having a good time.
There were 2 to 3 staffs working there. As the restaurant is family run, there is only
rush during the lunch hours. The staffs were all smiling and were helpful. They were
interacting with everybody though they seemed to have some limitations in the matter of
language fluency. They could not understand all the accents that the mixed crowd was
speaking. They were otherwise able to take the orders and deliver food to the right table.
