3 SOCIOLOGY Introduction The American Electoral College is considered to be mostly unusual by most of the people of the globe. However, the following Electoral College has its own importance and plays an important role in the election of the President. The voting g procedure of the Electoral College can even overpower the popular vote of the country. Thus the vote of the Electoral College of USA stands out as the decider in most of the Presidential elections till date that has taken place in the country1. The college was formed as a compromise between the founding fathers of the college who were unable to decide whether the citizens or the congress should be given the power to elect the President. The Electoral College Vote will officially be counted by the congress on a fixed date. A minimum of 270 single electoral votes needs to be gained in order to be selected as the President of the organization. Interesting Fact and Opinion As said earlier, it is quite strange as well as interesting that the common citizens or the popular mass have no right to vote as to select the President of the country. Instead they have the right to vote for the party that may be elected to the power. The Party congress in turn will formulate a vote in the Electoral College which will select the President of the USA2. 4 SOCIOLOGY one of the most interesting fact in the following case is that the Winner of the popular vote does not always win the presidency. Similarly there have been several instances where the losers of the popular elections have gone on to become the Presidents of the country3. Some examples in this case are John Quincy Adams ,in the year 1824 lost the popular vote by a margin of more than 40.000 but still went on to become the President. Even George W Bush in the year 2000 was defeated by the popular mass but was elected President of the country b y means of the vote of Electoral College. This particular policy of the Electoral College vested in the US Constitution is quite strange as this makes the popular vote lose its importance4. The failure to provide justification to the choice of the popular mass is certainly a show of disrespect towards the mass voters. The system must be abolished as because the Presidential candidate can easily influence the members of the Electoral College and gain votes accordingly which represents biasness. Therefore it is important for the Government to change the law and make the selection of the President more transparent in nature. 3Erikson, Robert S., and Kent L.
