Sociology: Equality Rights of Aboriginal People in Canada

This essay discusses the equality rights of the Aboriginal people in Canada, highlighting the sociological factors affecting their current status. It explores the need for social workers and institutions to advocate for their rights. The essay also presents an implementation plan for promoting equality and eradicating discrimination.

Introduction
It is generally difficult for making any sort of generalizations regarding the definitions
of the rights of the Indigenous people due to the existence of diversity among First nations
and the Unit community people residing in Canada. The rights of the aboriginal community
people are inherent, community rights that has been flowing from the original occupation of
thee land which is Canada from social orders that has been created before the arrival of the
Europeans to North America (Canadian Human Rights Commission, 2013). For several of
the concepts the rights of the aboriginal people can be summed as the right towards self-
independence through the right towards independence by self-determination regarding the
land, governance, resources and culture (WHO, 2019). There lies no specific definition of the
rights of the aboriginal due to the presence of diversity among the community people. The
aboriginal people have traditionally pointed over three of the principal arguments towards the
establishment of their rights, which includes the international law, the proclamation of 1763
and the common laws as defined in the courts of Canada. The thesis statement of the essay
argues with the fact of the equality of the rights of the aboriginal people who are residing in
Canada.
Discussion
This part of the paper will highlight on the sociological concepts of the factors
targeting the current status of the aboriginal people in Canada. This section will also explain
why the social workers and the social worker institutions must initiate in the determination of
the equality rights of the indigenous population which are the aboriginal community people
residing in Canada.
Sociological Knowledge

The concept of equality is one of the essential sociological knowledge that combines
the concerns with the freedom and equality providing the idea that all the people from
different communities ought to live together. This paper highlights the need for the equality
rights of the aboriginal people in Canada.

The aboriginal community people have a long history and debate of being
discriminated in Canada. There lie various sociological factors highlighting the disparities
and the differences regarding the rights among the aboriginal and the non-aboriginal residents
of Canada.
The report from the Canadian Human rights Commission illustrated a very clear
picture regarding the stark differences among the wellbeing of the aboriginal and the non-
aboriginal population in Canada. The report regarding the equality rights of the aboriginal

people stated the overall welfare of the first nations, the Inuit by crunching numbers from six
of the major recent statistics of the Canadian studies.

The figure above illustrates the major factors of the sociological knowledge
highlighting the need towards the determination of the causes and the patters of the need for
the equality rights among the aboriginal people in Canada.
According to the reports and in the context of the above figure , the aboriginal people
in Canada are much more likely to be unemployed , receiver of social assistance, residing or
living in inadequate housing, experience some of the unjustified and violent crimes and
become incarcerated as compared to the non-aboriginals. According to Williams & Gill
(2017) the aboriginal Canadians are at the higher rate of disadvantage as compared to the
non-aboriginals.
The relationship of the country with the aboriginal people within its borders is
generally governed by the well-developed legal framework that is many of the respects is

protective of the right of the indigenous people. As per the above analysis and the reports
from the government regarding the discrimination regarding the aboriginal people in Canada,
there is an urgent need for the recommendation for the improvement of the scenario and the
promotion of the equality of rights of the aboriginals.
The recommendation includes the implementation of the project that includes the
effective tasks, procedures and resources that the government of Canada and the inhabitants
of the Canada who are non-aboriginals should initiate to promote equality to the aboriginal
residents in the country.

The figure above illustrates the process, the resources and the task included in the
project for the implementation of the equality of the rights of the indigenous population in
Canada.
The implementation plan and the national aboriginal health plan includes close
partnership with the national health leadership forum and reflects the priorities for the
improvement of the socio economic status and the health gap of the aboriginal people living
in Canada.

Experience
This section of the essay will highlight the description and the analysis of my personal
experiences with the events of the services which are the challenges, the breakouts, the
lessons learnt from the service learning procedure (WHO, 2019). The service learning
procedure included the implementation plan which helped me to understand the challenges
faced by the aboriginal people within their residence in Canada. Some of the challenges that I
faced includes the lack of the governmental persuasions towards the implementation of the
equity plan of the aboriginal people (Kerr, 2017). Some of the challenges, breakouts that I
have faced while planning the implementation of the equality rights to the indigenous people.
Some of the lessons that I have learned from the reports are the following.
 The Canadian non aboriginal population does not respect the aboriginal people and
does not treat them as their equivalent in terms of the right.
 There lies high rate of chronic disease like the renal failure the cardio vascular disease
and diabetes
 There lies high level of health disparities among the facilities provided by the
government health care hospitals to the aboriginal people due to racial discriminations
(Dyck et al., 2015)
 Lack of proper educational services to the aboriginal children together with the
introduction of the residential schooling to the aboriginal community that affects the
community as a whole
 Lack of proper housing and the context of the scenarios related to the homelessness of
the aboriginal people in Canada

 Though there lies certain policies ad laws by the governments of Canada and also the
rights by the United Nations, the governmental agencies are still very reluctant
regarding the action and the practise of provision of equality to the aboriginal
population
 The aboriginal population furthermore faced discrimination in case of employment
opportunities and are often overlooked in case of promotions and rewards
 According the statistics by the bureau of Canadian administration of justice, the
number of the prisoners in Canada belonging from the aboriginal community is far
higher as compared to the non aboriginal, explaining the factor how the aboriginal
people are the victims of the lack of proper justice
 The aboriginal women and the girls are also disproportionately the victims of the
frequent violent crimes (Durette, 2018). The native women’s association of the
Canada has reported cases over 660 regarding the murder and missing of aboriginal
girls which has remained as unsolved mystery.
 The funding by the government towards the socio economic status and the
improvement of the status of the aboriginal community people so that they can
receive equity and equality of their rights has been lacking throughout the years.
 Lack of effective participation of the indigenous people in the decision making
process projecting the fact that the aboriginal people are not treated and greeted
equally by the no aboriginal ones
 Lack of equal access towards primary health care and the infrastructure of the health
among the aboriginal people in Canada.
Service Outcomes
The service outcomes or the goal of the implementation projects has been the
achievement of the aboriginal health equality with the generation. Furthermore the goal has

been the eradication of the discrimination and the factors targeting the marginalization of the
aboriginal people.

Thus it can be summarized that the service outcome from the implementation plan is as
follows.
 Emphasizes over the accountability of the government of Canada regarding the socio
economic outcomes among the various sectors of the civil society by the treatment as
the matter of the legal objections (Spence et al., 2016)
 Establishment of the fundamental principles for the guidance of the development of
the policy so that the aboriginal people are not discriminated and receives equal
opportunity.
 Recognition as the legitimate and non-discriminatory together with the establishment
of the specific programs for the particular groups.
Sociological concept and paradigms

Throughout these project, the sociological paradigms and the concepts that have been
used includes the following factors.
The effectiveness of the system of health - The Canadian system of the health services
delivers health care facilities to all the residents but there has been various reports regarding
the lack of proper services to the aboriginal people (Currie et al., 2015). My sociological
paradigms includes the concepts of the improved regional planning and co-ordination of the
health care services across the providers and the sectors of the aboriginal community.
The maternal health and parenting – The implementation plan targeted the strengthening of
the communities and the system of the kingships to the aboriginal people in the context of the
security and the safety of the system of the family.
Childhood health and development –In Canada, the government initiated the residential
schooling for the aboriginal children which is a strong challenge towards the families of the
aboriginal community of Canada.
Rate of employments and the economic status of the aboriginal people – One of the major
sociological paradigm had been the identification of the gap among the economic standards
of the aboriginal and the non-aboriginal people in Canada that furthermore affects the
standard of living of the aboriginal people together with their housing patterns (Lamb, Yap &
Turk, 2018).
Promotion of racial free environment through out the society - this sociological factor is
essential since racial discrimination is as established social determent of the associated health
with some of the adverse psychological outcomes among the aboriginal population.
Conclusion

Thus it can be concluded from the above assignment that aboriginal people receives
and faces various sort of discrimination and challenges within the Canadian society. There
lies no specific definition of the rights of the aboriginal due to the presence of diversity
among the community people. The aboriginal people have traditionally pointed over three of
the principal arguments towards the establishment of their rights, which includes the
international law, the proclamation of 1763 and the common laws as defined in the courts of
Canada. The essay argued with the fact of the equality of the rights of the aboriginal people
who are residing in Canada. I have initiated in the development of an implementation plan for
the equal rights of the aboriginals within the country and I expect to learn more about the
challenges and the issues the aboriginal people have been facing through out the life in
Canada.
