SOLAR POWER PLANT IN UAE 3
Introduction
A solar power system is an advanced technology to produce electricity from the sun, there
are many countries uses this technology to generate electricity from the sun. There are many solar
power plants in UAE such as Shams solar power system, Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar
plant, and PV solar plant(IPP). Sham solar is the largest solar power plant in Abu Dhabi.
Solar power plant in UAE
There are following types of solar power plant used in UAE-
Name Year Location
Shams solar power plant 2013 Abu Dhabi
Mohammed bin Rashid Al

2016 Ras Al Khaimah
Shams solar power plant
Shams solar power system is the largest plant placed in Abu Dhabi, which is a concentrating
power station near Abu Dhabi, and Madinat Zayed. It is located at 120 Km southwest of Abu Dhabi,
and 6 Km from Madinat Zayed. Shams solar power plant launched on 17th March 2013. There are
three shams stations in which shams 1 uses parabolic trough technology system and capacity of this
solar plant is around 100 MW. The Shams displaces around 175000 tons of CO2 per year and which
is enough to provide electricity for 20000 homes. It consists of 192 solar collector parabolic loops
with 8 solar assemblies per loop, 258048 parabolic trough mirrors. Shams solar power plant covers
around 2.5 squares Km (Gulf news, 2017).
The basic design of shams solar has been developed by AG Ingenieria, and complete project
is consulted by Fichtner engineers. The equipment and component are designed by Mr Foster
Wheeler, and power station for this project is delivered by ASTRO collectors. For shams solar power
plant, a steam turbine of 125 megawatts is delivered by MAN turbo, parabolic mirrors are given by
Flabeg. PTR 70 tubes are designed by Schott Ag and heat transfer tube is delivered by Solutia
(Masdar clean energy, 2017).
Technical specification of Shams solar power plant

Capacity: 100 megawatts
Net output: 210 GWh
Technology: Parabolic trough technology
Construction cost: US$ 600 million (Power technology, 2015).
The Shams solar power generates around 100 megawatts power and covers around 741 acres
area. Shams have a solar field around 6,458,346 square fit, with 768 parabolic mirrors. It uses
parabolic trough technology and dry cooling system for cooling. Shams project is discovered by a
venture made of Masdar solar. Shams power plant provides a renewable energy in Abu Dhabi and
also provides electricity to around 20,000 homes in Abu Dhabi. Shams project is developed by the
Shams organization, and Masdar solar company (Royal meteorological society, 2013). The building
cost of Shams power plant is around US$ 600 million. It is financed by ten lenders, BNP Paribas, and
the national bank of UAE. There are many applications of solar energy such as solar water heating,
solar distillation, pumping, drying of agricultural, solar cooking, and generation of electricity. The
main application of solar energy is to generate electricity from solar, UAE uses this application to
produce electricity for homes.
Conclusion
A solar system is a Morden technology to generate energy and convert into electricity. There
are many applications of solar energy such as solar water heating, solar distillation, pumping, drying
of agricultural, solar cooking, and generation of electricity. UAE uses solar power generation
technology, and there are three main power plants in UAE such as Shams solar power system,
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar system, and PV solar prank.
