Learning outcome(s):
 Learners should have the capability of naming all the planets.
 Students should show ability of identifying the planets and their unique feature.
 Learners should be able to determine each planet position from the sun.
Teaching Material(s):
The teacher would require the right set of text books and in sufficient number to be a
reference point, Audio visual material in form of CD with the content, a TV to display the video,
Speakers for audio and a DVD player for playing the CD.
Lesson Summary
In this lesson we will mention the planets, show their position from the sun, mention
some of the unique features, and list them from the biggest to the smallest.
Duration
In order to cover the topic effectively the teacher will need four lessons each of 40
minutes.

Lesson Type
The students will be working under the close supervision of the teacher, in some cases
they would be required to be in groups and also the lesson will be demonstrable as they will be
taken outside to see if they can observe the planets closer to the earth.
Technology Integration
The technology to be used in the lesson will include a Television, a DVD player and
speaker. A projector should be on standby if needed. The computer room will also be used by
student when given individual assignment to go and find more details about the solar system

Gain attention 5-10 minutes Entering in the class and greeting the students. When
the teacher enters the class they will greet the students
and tell them his/her name. Seeking attention will
involve use of questions about solar system. Teacher
is to brainstorm students’ knowledge. It will involve
calling student by name and ask questions.
Inform learners
of objectives
5 minutes The teacher will outline the objectives of the topic and
clear explain what they expect at the end of the topic.
The teacher will read out the lesson objectives slowly
and if requires the students will write down the
objectives. Teacher to write objectives on the board.
The teacher will also make students copy the
objectives in notebooks. They will each say the
objectives individually. The teacher will use pin
manila papers on walls with the objectives. Students

Stimulate recall
of prior learning
7-12 minutes Presenting past experience by asking questions and
visual aid that will stimulate memory prior to the
lessons. The tutor will pose questions to the learners
about the previous class in order to gouge the students
memory, the question are relatively fair and easy to
answer in order to keep the class interactive and
interesting. The teacher will also brainstorm the class
on past lesson ideas. Pick students at random and have
them say what they remember.
Present stimulus 10-15 minutes The new content is delivered to the learner. The use
of audio, visual display will be incorporated into the
lesson to teach complex concepts. The teacher will
officially start teaching the content, a television set a
DVD and speakers will be brought as they will be
used in the lesson. The teacher will play Cd that has
the learning content and the students will observe
silence and less movement so as not to cause
disruption. The lesson will involve writing notes on
the board. Teacher will draw solar system on the
board. Students will copy notes during lesson in
notebooks. Students to practice drawing and naming
the solar system in their books and manila papers.

5-10 minutes The teacher will provide examples to students and
give handouts and questions of what is expected from
the lesson. After watching the CD the tutors will give
the learners a chart that has the planets drawn in their
orbit and their position from the sun. Further handout
will be given to the students so as to use for personal
revision. Students to work in groups of three and
discuss solar system. Teacher to guide the groups to
arrange pieces on ground that symbolize the planets
on the ground and name them.
Elicit
performance
40-45 minutes Giving practical activities, case studies and group
activities. The teacher will conduct a class activity that
will involve the students coming up with a song that
will enable them remember the planets easily. Every
student will be required to memorize this song in order
for them to be able to list the planets. Students to
discuss on their own in groups of three. The teacher is
to pick any member and have them repeat the planets
on their own. Students are to draw a common solar
system on a large manila paper without copying from
anywhere. Students to exchange the work with other
groups and compare which group wins.
Provide feedback 5-10 minutes Students would be asked random questions and they
can reply by simply raising their hands to get an
overview on who has understood the lesson. The
teacher will ask random question based on what is

covered to gauge the level of understanding. Students
will have to raise their hands in order to be chosen to
give answers; the teacher might opt to choose any
student just to see if they are par with the other
students. Teachers should make use of exercises
within the lesson for understanding and to enhance
leaners comprehension, this should not be mistaken
for a formal scoring. Teacher is to allocate sample
marks for each student. The teacher is to make
students clap for those who get questions right.
Students to ask teacher questions about challenging
areas. Teacher to have students try giving answers to
raised questions and approve them.
Assess
performance
20 minutes The learner will be given a post-assessment test to test
each individuals understanding. They will be a strict
supervision to ensure that no learner has access to any
learning material that they can use. The teacher will
prepare an assessment test that the students will be
required to do without assistance. The teacher will
then mark the assignment and grade it to see if the
students understood what they learnt. The teacher will
help in revision of questions. Good performers to be
awarded with pens and books. Students to do
corrections for missed queries.
Enhance
Retention and

20-40 minutes The learners will be provided with material that
enhance retention, participate in group discussions and
class presentations. The tutor will subdivide the

learners into small groups and allow them to have
group discussion any group that has issue can refer to
the text book and if not satisfied they can ask the
teacher any question for further clarification. The
teacher should avail materials that enhance retention
to the students. Drawing of charts and visual aid also
help enhance retention of knowledge. The teacher can
also apply group discussion in order for students to
learn from each other. Teacher to brainstorm students
before start of next lesson about past lesson and help
them recall what they forgot. Test students after a
week to see what they remember. Reward and
encourage students to read to avoid forgetting.
Assessment
At the end of the topic the students would be given question to answer individually to see
if they can list the planets in the order they follow each other, list the planets from the biggest to
the smallest and vice versa and also be able to name unique features of these planets. Describe
what student products or performances you will be looking at and how they will be evaluated.
Remember, this should be tightly related to the objectives you stated above.
