SOUND ATTENUATING WINDOW SYSTEMS FOR RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS
Introduction
Sound control has been a growing trend in the construction industry. Buildings are often
constructed near roads and noisy market place. These busy places create a lot of noise and
pollution. Sound attenuating window systems are an essential components for reducing noise in
the buildings. This report has focused on three products having sound attenuation property in
window systems. It has been creating a lot of nuisance during office and peak hours. Therefore,
modern technology has helped in minimizing noise in surroundings when inside residential
buildings. These three products are Magnetite Windows, Soundtite Windows and Doors and
Silicone Sealant. Advantages and Disadvantages of these three products have been discussed in
the report. The cost of each product along with their installation has been discussed in the report.

As commented by Barclay, Kang and Sharples (2012), the population of Australia has
been increasing specifically in Queensland region. Therefore, there has been increase in demand
for construction of buildings in the area. Noise is both serious environmental and health issue
faced in society. Despite this, reduction of noise through gap with an open window has been an
issue that has received little attention in Australia. In order to reduce /internal noise level, various
prediction methods are required including primary method of interest which is EN 12354.3
(2000) “Air Bourne sound insulation against outdoor sound” formula. The prediction done using
this method, internal noise level calculation were taken under a theory of Australian Standard AS
3671 (1989) related to open space percentage of the exposed building elements (Park and Kim
2015). The AS 3671 (1989) formula can be represented as follows:
Lpin = Lpout – TL – F + 10LOG (A) – 10LOG(V) + 10LOG (T) + 14

Where:
Lpin = Internal Noise Level
Lpout = External Noise Level
TL = Spectral Transmission Loss of Element
F = Façade Shape Level Difference
A = Element Area
V = Room Volume
T = Reverberation Time
The +14 component is a combination of the +6 dB reverb – free field correction and the +8
resulting from -10log (0.161) from the rearranged Sabines formula.
NR = 10LOG (A/100)
Where, NR = Noise Reduction dB (A)
A = Open Area % of Building Envelope

Windows are the main source of noise penetration in a building. Noise pollution caused
by traffic, trains and neighbours has been common in residential areas. External noise has been
disturbing concentration and efficiency of employees and workers in commercial buildings.
Therefore, there are various products that might help in reducing noise from external and internal
sources in a residential building. There are various products that help in reducing noise in
