INTRODUCTION
MGJ is a 13-year-old boy who is suffering from Autistic Spectrum Disorder and
Speech as well as language difficulty. There is a need for the student to go to the school
of alternative provision. Autism can be defined as a developmental disorder that
involves difficulties with social interaction as well as communication and by repetitive as
well as restricted behavior (Arellano and et.al., 2019). The symptoms of the disorder
involve trouble with interacting with people, learning disability or speech delay in child.
MGJ is verbally aggressive towards his staff members as well as peers. And his
physical aggression towards his staff members is increasing constantly and also, tries to
gain attention. Due to his aggressive nature, MSG also attempts to throw objects such
as chairs and even try to turn over tables. The report explains the different barriers to
learning as well as teaching and learning approaches that can be opted for the student
so that he can live a healthy lifestyle.
Barriers to Learning
Identify the barrier(s) to learning for this student (what methods were used, and the
advantages and limitations of these). Make links between the theory/research and the
evidence collected for the student.
Autism is a broad term that is used in order to describe a group of
neurodevelopmental disorders. People who deal with autism have problems with
communication as well as social interaction. There are different barriers for MGJ that
can affect his overall learning process to a great extent. In the given case study, the
specific barriers that MGJ is dealing with are social communication. This results into
poor relationships with peers, staff members. Also, he is not able to express himself.
There are a number of barriers so as to provide better as well as appropriate support to
those dealing with autism (Carpenter, Happé and Egerton, 2019). These include a lack
of knowledge as well as training, funding, a lack of appropriate resourcing etc. Funding
is a barrier for people dealing with autism because it can have a significant impact on
the amount of resourcing as well as support. The availability of resources as well as
funding varies among different schools as well as geographical locations. Funding is a
major barrier not just in terms of different locations and schools procedures and

phenomena’s but also so depending upon the situation and the critical condition through
which the student is going. In simple words, dealing with autism specifically the student
have different conditions depending upon their treatment going on as well as on the
basis of there personal abilities. Hence, it becomes a very critical aspect for a student to
gain appropriate learning knowledge while facing lack of resources due to pencil
support.
As per the view point of Elizabeth Biggs, barriers to social communication can be
related to their disability directly or motor skills (Potential Barriers to Social Interaction
for Children with Complex Communication Needs, 2021). Another learning barrier for a
person dealing with autism is the lack of training as well as knowledge among the
teachers (Supporting students with autism in the classroom: what teachers need
to know, 2021). Although most of the teachers who provide support and learning to
children dealing with autism, receive professional training and have relevant experience
of working in the field. But teachers who lack sufficient training can affect the overall
learning process for the students making it difficult for them to enhance their knowledge.
It is important to ensure the use of educational approaches that are tailored as per the
need of individual students as well as flexible approaches is important (Clark, Zhou and
Du, 2019). Children who deal with autism find it difficult to build relationships with the
staff members as well as their peers. Due to this, their learning process gets hindered.
MGJ is unable to express himself due to which, his ability to grasp different things is
getting affected.
Another focus which need to be imposed in regards to increasing training and
experience of professionals for teachers who are students suffering from autism is is
over there attitudes and mentality which links to their thinking process. It is important
that teachers receiving the trainings to deal with student suffering from autism also need
to have a little bit understanding of the mental trauma and problem through which the
student is suffering. The professionals need to make sure that day connect with the
students hence the training programs need to be modified and altered accordingly in
order to enable the professionals appropriate knowledge and experience to deal with
their students.
