INTRODUCTIONThere is great role of sports in the society as it provides the understanding about theissues and controversies which are associated with the sports in society. Sports is studied underthe sociological aspects and factors which are co-related to them (Dashper, Fletcher &McCullough, 2014). Following report will provide the critical evaluation of social factorsassociated with Commonwealth Games and its federation. After that rules and regulation,societal impact and current role of sports are mentioned. It is an perfect example where differentsocieties is brought together and friendly games are played. PAST about the Games The beginning of this games were started from the year 1930 where 11 countries haveparticipated in it. It was held in Hamilton, London with 400 athletes who have participated in 59events in 6 sports. Except for the 1942 and 1946 (due to second world war), every year thisgames were conducted. During 1930's six games were famous, these were Aquatics, Athletics,boxing, lawn bowls, Rowing and wrestling. The complete expenditure for the games was$97,973.00. At the beginning the games were popular as British Empire Games till 1950. Afterthat, up to 1966 it was under the British Empire and Commonwealth Games. In the year 1974,Britishers mentioned their name and named it British Commonwealth Games. Finally in the year1978, Commonwealth Games was named due to its uniqueness, international popularity andmultiple events of sports that were played. After that, there were many games introduced in thisarea and many countries were added latter on (Boxill, 2015). Equality and sportsmanship waspromoted during the time of events. There are more than 2.2m people associated with the gameswhich counts for 30% of global population. Along with this, people from different cultures,faiths, languages, races and traditions participate in it. Due to all such features it is also known as'Friendly Games'. In the year 1891, John Astley proposed it for the first time to organize an event to be heldafter every four years. During 1978, in Commonwealth Games there were 46 countries and 1583athletes who have participated in in those games. During the starting of the 21st century, in theyear 2002, the games were hosted and played in Manchester, England. Many new sports andgames were added into it. Around 17 sports and 281events in total were featured in the game. Inthe year 2006, there was absence of Zimbabwe but the games were held in Melbourne, Australia.As mentioned that every year participants were increasing, in the year 2006, there were 40001

players who have promoted the event. Until now there were many records created and broken.Moreover, the stage provided respect and glory to many people. After the next four years in 2010, it was held in India at Delhi which become the mostexpensive games ever as it costed over $11 billion. There were 21 sports, 71 commonwealthnations, 272 events and 6081 athletes. Until now there were 828 medals given to sports person inwhich Australia is at the top winning 74 golds, 55 silver and 48 bronze making total of 177. Atthe next position is India with 38 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze medals, a total of 101 medals.After that, it is followed by England, Canada. In 2014, the event was held in Glasgow, Scotland. Sports events up to 18, 71 nationsparticipating and an estimation of 1947 athletics have participated in the games. The highestachievement was made by England with 174 medals and second position was trapped byAustralia with 137 medals. Canada was on the third position with 82 medals followed byScotland with 53. There was 261 medal ceremonies and 1,385 medals were won by participants.The estimated budget which was spend at that time was £575.6 million which included the overall changes and security amount. For the opening ceremonies there were 2000 participants whichincluded famous personalities. The event held for 10 days starting from 23rd to3rd August 2015.There were many Partners, supports and providers which helped in completing and organizingthe games peacefully (DiFiori & et. al. 2014). It was known as Friendly games as in the beginning the countries which have participatedin it were familiar to one common language that is English. Moreover, to increase thecompetitiveness and excitement in the games, the federation started team sports at the beginningof 1998 games at Kuala Lumpur. Out of the total 16 games held, 4 of them were played inAustralian cities. When Commonwealth games were started, in year 1930, Australia come up at 6thposition with 4 medals and England made the first position with 25 medal in which they won 9gold medals. The games which was not based on the geographic features but on the historicalaspects. The next games will be held in the year 2018 at the Gold Coast Queensland Australiawhich will provide the opportunity to Australians to host it for the fifth time. Every year, there is different motto and logo of the commonwealth games. In 2014, themotto was "People, Place, Passion". The official mascot for that year was Clyde which is floral2
