might fit in with your long-term vision. Imagine yourself travelling approximately 5 or 10 years into
the future. This activity is not about laying down a rigid plan but to help you gain a sense of the type
of life you want, so you can make the right kinds of choices to achieve it (200 words).
Activity: The Long-term vision
Five/ten years from now, I see myself...
Aspect Write your own vision of this aspect
below
On a scale of 1-10 how

things in my life to be… Having a family that cares and a team at
work that understands and supports me

there is no place for violence

Working for myself? Working
for a large company? Working
for a small company?
I want to work for myself five to ten years

How does this role match my long term vision? – Use own words
Advantages Disadvantages
I think I would enjoy the varying roles
and responsibilities the job requires me to
perform. I also would not mind working for long
hours because event managing is an exciting job
that demands communicating with variety of
people. The role demands being creative all the
time and it is exciting to witness my ideas and
creativity being implemented successfully.
Event management also gives an opportunity to
develop my business skills. Further, I also get
the opportunity to refine my time management
skills.
With long hours of dealing with people
and finalizing venues, I might not be able to give
time to my personal life. The work-life balance
might be disturbed. In addition, event manager
has the responsibility to make sure that
everything goes as planned and the clients are
satisfied. If things turn out to be the opposite, it
might contribute to increased stress. In addition,
arranging big events within the prescribed
budget might be challenging. I would also be
worried for the fact that I would have to manage
diary system and make sure that there are
varieties of events.

Portfolio Evidence [Week 2] Belbin test
Belbin (1996) outlines the different type of roles people may have within a team. Complete the
following questionnaire to identify your main role(s). You will discuss the results in your week 2
tutorial. To complete the questionnaire:

of which you feel sums you up well while the other only applies some of the time.
E.g. You could give your first choice seven points and three points to your second choice. In some
instances you might decide that there are two sentences which apply to you equally – if this is the

Portfolio Evidence [Week 3] Cross-cultural awareness/negotiating
Negotiations are complex. One factor is how different cultures approach negotiating when doing
business internationally. In the following scenario, what cultural misunderstandings could occur and
what strategies can you undertake to minimise those misunderstandings? Write two paragraphs (150
words).
Scenario:
Saudi Arabia is using its vast oil wealth to build $400bn of new infrastructure with major rail,
healthcare and construction projects. A British and Chinese company have been awarded two of the
largest contracts. They need to negotiate with each other and the Saudis to plan some of the transport
projects

healthcare and construction projects. A British and Chinese company have been awarded two of the
largest contracts. They need to negotiate with each other and the Saudis to plan some of the transport
projects
12
The given scenario is a complex one as people from three different cultures have to
communicate with each other to strike a negotiation. It is preeminent that major cultural
misunderstandings would arise if the delegates were not well versed with each other’s culture. To
the Chinese, negotiation means discussing elaborately and then coming to a judgment. The British
believe in quick outcomes to negotiations while the Saudis give more importance to clear and
concise drafting of negotiations (Stahl and Tung 2015). Hence, misunderstandings like not giving
importance to details, being rude or irresponsive and wasting precious time might arise during
negotiations.
One of the great strategies to tackle such situations is to be culturally competent and have a
team that comprises culturally diverse members. Having someone trained in cross-cultural
communication in the team could also be a great strategy to reduce cultural misunderstandings
(Ribbink and Grimm 2014). Making certain amendments to the negotiating rules without having to
compromise any cultural norms is also a good strategy that could be applied.

Evaluate your meeting in your tutorial from the perspective of both your group and you as an
individual (if you did not attend in week 4, please use one of the follow-up meetings you will have in
class to complete this section; write 350 words).
The Group
Outcomes
(What did you
achieve/decide?) In an enlightening session at the meeting, our group came
up with innovative ideas to complete the project. Comprising 32
members, the group had great variety in terms of skills and
abilities that was utilized accordingly. It was decided that tasks
would be divided amongst every member according to their area
of expertise.
Time Management
(How effective was your use
of the time?)
The meeting started 5 minutes later than the scheduled
time. A checklist was prepared prior to the meeting and points
discussed as per priority. Some interruptions caused the meeting
to delay a bit further but the actual objective was achieved within
the allotted time.
Communication
(How well did you
communicate with each
other?)
Communication was good within the group except few
instances of misunderstandings rising due to poor communication.
However, there were other instances when the team appreciated
the ideas of other members and responded well.

Dealing with Conflict
(How did you deal with any
disagreement?) Disagreements were dealt in a professional way by the
chair of the meeting. Some points made by a group member was
viewed as racist and against business ethics. This led to
disagreements, which was solved with elaborated discussion
giving everyone to put their point of view.

I was satisfied with my participation in the meeting. I was
given an important responsibility do the minute taking as well.
However, initially I felt a bit reluctant to speak but other members
showed good support.
Contribution
(What ideas did you
contribute?) I had a lot to contribute during the meeting. At first, I put
forward my viewpoints and justifications. Later, I put on the role
of a minute taker and jotted down all the points made by the group
members. I also contributed towards deciding the location and
time of the next meeting.
Communication
(How well did you explain
yourself and listen to others?)
I communicated quite well as I was able to clarify my
points. Other group members had little difficulty in understanding
what I wanted to say. Although my speaking skills were good, I
felt I needed to listen to others more clearly.

Portfolio Evidence [Week 7] Ethical awareness
In a professional environment we are often faced with complex situations revolving around ethical
conduct. Decide on two ethical issues faced by you during your teamwork and discuss them in terms of
ethical awareness (100 words):
First, respect for each team members. During the teamwork, I found that some members had
little respect for the views and opinions of students belonging to minority communities. It was
completely against team ethics. I also found that little did the team members know about the codes
of conduct that needed to be followed during teamwork.
Second is integrity. I found that some students were involved in unethical ways of seeking
support for completion of their tasks from people outside the group. The students were not aware
that it was against ethics of teamwork and is might even be dealt with serious outcomes.

Portfolio Evidence [Weeks 9] Post-presentation reflection
Reflect on your groups and your own performance in the group presentation/video/debate – bring a
copy of this page to your week 10 tutorial. Use feedback from your peers and tutor. (350 words)
The Group
Content
(How clear, complete and
informative was the
presentation?)
The introduction section by Jake, the group leader
provided a good start to the presentation. Ideas and information
meant to be transmitted to the audience was done with
competence, as the content was good. However, minor glitches
in the video resulted in short lapses of audience concentration.
Audience Engagement
(How enjoyable / interesting
did the audience find it?)
Starting from the introduction to the ending part, the
audiences were gripped to the video. They seemed curious to
find out the outcomes of the short movies, which was an
achievement for the group. However, the message sent was
unclear to a section of audience.
Organisation
(How well-structured was it?
How well did the visuals
support it?)
Organization was structured well but the visuals could
have been better. Some portions of the movie were not received
well that was evident from audience’s reaction. It was observed
that some ideas did not reach to the audience because of its
complexity.

Professionalism and Teamwork
(How slick and professional
was it? How well did your
group combine?)
In terms of teamwork, things turned out to be more than
what was expected. The team got together great and delivered
what was required. In terms of professionalism however, a lot
needs to be learnt, especially in case of being punctual.
Yourself
Delivery
(How confident, engaging and
clearly did you speak?) I was confident while speaking to the audience and
introducing them to our presentation. In the video as well, I gave
my cent percent that was visible from the appreciation I
received. Although I spoke really well, I could have been more
presentable I felt. Being presentable gives boost to confidence.
Clarity
(How well did you explain
yourself?) I was good in communicating my ideas and making
others understand it. This was evident from the responses given
by the audiences. However, I feel that I need to improve a lot on
my pronunciation, as some words are not well understood by
people.
Team Support
(How well did you support the
other people in the group?)
Concerning this, I did not have to support any team
member because all of them were competent enough. However, I
did contribute towards quick resolution of the video glitches, as I
possess some knowledge about technical.

the presentation. The member has a knack of going though every aspect of presentation before it
is finalized. One of his biggest strengths is his ability to listen to others and utilize the positive
points. Listening is very crucial to be a good communicator and that is his best quality.
Areas for Improvement: However, he has limited leadership skills and that was evident from
his laid-back attitude. Further, he had little interest in giving ideas or resolving conflicts that
occurred within the group. He was engrossed in his own work.
Overall: I think if he works in these areas than he has the ability to become a great leader and a
team player. To attain more confidence in presentation
