1.1INTRODUCTION TO SRI LANKAN AIRLINES
1.1.1Brief History of Sri Lankan Airlines
Sri Lankan Airlines is the flag carrier of Sri Lanka and a member airline of the One
world airline alliance. It is currently the largest airline in Sri Lanka by number of aircraft and
destinations and was launched in 1979 as Air Lanka following the termination of operations of
the original Sri Lankan flag carrier Air Ceylon. Following its partial acquisition in 1998
by Emirates, it was re-branded and the current livery was introduced. In 2008, the government of
Sri Lanka acquired all the shares of the airline from Emirates. After ending the Emirates
partnership, it retained its re-branded name and logo
1.1.2Current Situation
Mr. Ashok Pathirage is recently appointed as chairman of Sri Lankan Airlines, and Mr. Vipula
Gunathilaka as CEO.
Sri Lankan Airlines has 24 aircrafts on its current fleet, and operates to 113
destinations in 51 countries.
Like every Airline, Sri Lankan Airline also facing a downward with this
current situation(covid-19). Even though Sri Lankan Airline struggling with this current situation
we manage to provide our customers with their needs and wants. As a matter of fact, Sir Lankan
Airlines has started new destinations recently also it has turned one of its own aircraft as a cargo
only carrier.
1.2PRODUCT AND SERVICES
1.2.1CARGO
General Freight
Sri Lankan cargo has the most economical global distribution cargo service for general freight.
This service is available on all Sri Lankan Airlines flights. Registered users can make
reservations online. If you are a new customer, you may register online or contact one of the Sri
Lankan Cargo offices for further details.

Dangerous Goods
Handled only by specially trained staff in accordance with IATA laws and regulations, Sri
Lankan Airlines provides safe and secure movement for dangerous cargo items such as
explosives, radioactive materials, etc. They are constantly monitored while different loading
procedures are followed in compliance with the prevailing international standards.
Live Animals
Live animals - pets or otherwise - are welcome by Sri Lankan Cargo. We transport birds, live
fish, horses, dogs, cats or even baby elephants. According to IATA standards all live animals
undertaken for transport are given the best possible care in terms of comfort, appropriate food,
hygiene and safety. We will advise you and assist you with international and national laws
governing the carriage of animals and with the certification and documentation procedures.
Perishables
Perishables such as fish, meat, dairy, fruit and vegetables receive extra care with us. Specially
maintained temperatures and storage facilities handled by professionally trained staff ensure
perishables come to you in peak condition.
Valuables
Sri Lankan Cargo provides maximum security to valuable commodities such as banknotes,
jewelry and gemstones from acceptance through to final delivery at destination. Specially
developed containers, highly secured storage areas and constant surveillance guarantees the
highest level of security for your valuables.
Vulnerable
Vulnerable items receive infinite care with Sri Lankan Cargo. Mobile phones, camcorders or
semi-precious goods are handled by trained cargo personnel ensuring safe movement globally.
Secure storage areas, high security measures and 24-hour monitoring is provided for these items.

1.2.3GROUND HANDLING
Sri Lankan Airlines Ground Handling is one of the major Ground and Cargo handlers in the
region. Currently, it serves over 30 regular customer Airlines and ADHOC carriers at
Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Colombo, Sri Lanka. With an Average revenue of
over USD 36 million per year, Sri Lankan Airlines is the only Ground Handler at BIA with
approx. 2000 employees who are well trained and experienced in Ground Handling.

1.2.9TRANSIT HOTEL
Serenediva Colombo Transit Hotel
Our world class hospitality can be experienced at the Serenediva Colombo, the only transit hotel
at Bandaranaike International Airport, which is managed by Sri Lankan Catering. Designed for
the weary travelers wanting a few hours of undisturbed rest and relaxation between flights, the
Serenediva’s 32 rooms are categorized as Serenediva Deluxe and Serenediva Standard, and
provide options of single / double / triple, family and budget rooms.
1.2.10LAUNDRY
Aero clean, Sri Lankan Catering’s 24-hour laundry facility, provides laundry, pressing
and dry-cleaning services or airlines, hotels and other customers. It is equipped with
sophisticated equipment that safely handles everything from blankets of airline
customers to bridal dresses and uniforms of hotel guests.

The delicious creations of our talented chefs can be experienced at the Vanilla Pod,
our pastry and confectionary which caters to the Sri Lankan palette and serves the Sri
Lankan Airlines employee clientele. The wide range of delectable cakes, pastries,

1.3SIZE AND SCOPE OF SRI LANKAN AIRLINES
Like all the other businesses in the country Sri Lankan Airline also facing a hard time through
this pandemic situation. Because of that the company has to let go of its some employees. Even
though that happened currently around 6700 employees working for Sri Lankan Airlines. And
Sri Lankan Airlines is the only Airline operates in Sri Lanka and only Ground Handling Agent in
Bandarnayake International Airport.
Sri Lankan Airlines has started a new business plan for the period of 2019-24 with the
objective of transforming itself into a financially viable organization with a high brand visibility
and a global reputation. while turning into a strategic hub for air travel and air cargo in the Asia -
Africa and Middle East region
This business plan which was crafted by the management of the
airline under the guidance of CEO to make a contribution to the GDP as the national carrier of
Sri Lanka in different areas, including all export, import and leisure and envisages a
corresponding increased contribution to the nation’s economy as the airline grow.
