INTRODUCTION
The Oral B Braun 5000 Electric toothbrush is a great dental solution that contains a brush head,
pressure sensor light, power buttons, brushing mode button, handle, radio transmission display,
charging unit and charge level display, Smart Guide, wall mount, adhesive ring, travel case,
pouch, and a smart Guide holder. The toothbrush is sold alongside a user manual to guide the
user in operating the toothbrush and the smart guide. The toothbrush is recommended for use by
persons above the age of three. Children and teenagers may use the toothbrush with guidance
from an adult. There are two distinct parts of the electric toothbrush package, namely, the electric
toothbrush, and the wirelessly connected smart guide (see appendix I). The toothbrush guide
warns of slight bleeding at the initial stages of using the toothbrush. The bleeding is bound to
stop after a few uses but if it persists, users are advised to seek dental attention.
The toothbrush comes in a variety of Oral-B Brush heads that fit the Oral-B toothbrush handle
and the oscillating rotating brush heads for the tooth-by-tooth precision cleaning. Oral-B
toothbrush has the CrossAction brush head and the FlossAction brush head.
OBJECTIVES
(I) To familiarize the reader with the toothbrush and SmartGuide by reviewing the User
Manual.
(II) To determine the functionality of the Oral B Braun 5000 electric toothbrush.
(III) To determine the functionality of the Oral B Braun 5000 SmartGuide.
(IV) To determine the state transition diagram of the toothbrush and SmartScreen using
MATLAB software.
FUNCTIONALITY OF THE ORAL B BRAUN 5000 ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH
(i) The electric toothbrush is connected to an electric outlet and the toothbrush handle is
placed on the charging unit. For a 2-minutes brush, the toothbrush must be charged
for about 40 minutes. It is impossible to overcharge the toothbrush.
(ii) For brushing purposes, the brush head is wet and the user applies toothpaste of
choice. The brush bristles need to be placed on the teeth before the toothbrush is
turned on. The recommended brushing technique is to guide the brush head slowly

from tooth to tooth while spending few seconds on each tooth surface. The brushing
techniques seeks to clean up each of the four quadrants of the mouth with equal time
frames.
(iii) The electric toothbrush has two timer options: professional or the 2-minute timer. The
former timer allows for the deep clean mode of brushing while the 2-minute timer is
the recommended brushing time by dentist. They provide short stuttering sounds and
a green light once activated. The timer has a memory which determines the time that
has lapsed during brushing even if the brushing is paused or stopped. The timer can
be reset and it automatically resets when the toothbrush is paused for 30 seconds. The
user has the option of personalizing the timer to change the brushing mode and setting
time for each quadrant cleaning and pause time.
(iv) The toothbrush is able to detect when a user applies excessive pressure on their teeth
while brushing as there is a pressure sensor in the electric toothbrush setup. The red
light of the pressure sensor is activated when too much pressure is applied. In normal
cleaning pressure mode, the green light is active. The pressure sensor in the electric
toothbrush is turned off during tongue cleaning.
(v) The interaction of the SmartScreen, SmartGuide, and the electric toothbrush allows
the toothbrush to run six different brushing modes alongside personalized modes. The
different brushing modes are the daily clean, deep clean, sensitive mode, whitening
mode, gum care mode, and the tongue cleaning mode.
FUNCTIONALITY OF THE ORAL B BRAUN 5000 SMARTGUIDE
(i) The SmartGuide connects to the Oral-B Braun 5000 Toothbrush using radio
transmission, notably, Bluetooth. For first time users, there is a demonstration mode.
The SmartGuide allows for the adjustment of the clock time.
(ii) The Guide displaying a blank screen indicates a need to replace the batteries before
inserting them into the SmartGuide for use. There is a set of batteries provided during
the purchase of the toothbrush. If the batteries have run out, one can purchase more
from the stores.

(iii) The SmartGuide allows for the clock reset and time changes from 12 hours to 24
hours as well as the time for personalized brush mode for the electric toothbrush.
(iv) The SmartGuide has different icons that demonstrate the brushing modes as well as
the battery status of the electric toothbrush. The different brushing modes are selected
and the SmartGuide implies the values entered on the toothbrush. To determine the
icon meaning, the user manual provides a guide in different languages.
STATE TRANSITION DIAGRAM
State transition diagrams model the details of the interaction between the Oral-B Braun 5000
Electric toothbrush to the SmartGuide and Smartphone App. The simulation and prototypes
facilitate proper communication of the interface design to the user. The state transition diagram
models the actions of the finite state machine with no state memory. The transition to a different
state is caused by a given even or when a particular condition is true. There are two important
components of the state transition diagram:
a. State
b. Transition

Choice of Software
Star UML.
The software is easy to use and it provides all the features needed in developing the states and
transitions for the system. The software is available online and can be used to develop any design
diagram for unified modelling in system design. The following subsection will illustrate the
operation and relationship between the electric toothbrush and the SmartScreen alongside the
implementation of the App on the Smart Phone.

Conclusion
More than one electric toothbrushes can connect to a single SmartGuide. The SmartGuide
is mounted on the wall using the adhesive ring or on the bathroom mirror or any other surface in
the washroom area. The report discusses the functionalities of the toothbrush and the
SmartGuide. The paper, further, discusses the state transition diagram demonstrating the
operation of the two in the system. The system uses radio connectivity methods such as
Bluetooth to connect the toothbrush to the SmartScreen for customizations, resetting and
adjusting time on the timer, and brushing modes for the toothbrush.
