Having an abusive parent can lead to poor development of the child, a manifestation of child
maltreatment. 1 in 5 women and 1 in 13 men was subjected to some or other kind of
maltreatment (who.int, 2019).
Consequences of maltreatment
Being a victim of violence
Depression
Smoking
Obesity
High risk in sexual behaviors
Accidental pregnancy and even miscarriage
Alcohol and drug misuse.
This behaviour can lead to increased rates of suicides and mental health consequences. Beyond
the social and health consequences, maltreatment often leads to poor economic impact including
the cost related to hospitalization, treatment for poor mental health, child welfare and longer
health related costs
Risk factors
Child:
Following are the chances that increases the risk for a child being maltreated
Being an adolescent or under four years of age
Being unwanted or failing to meet expectations of the parents
Child with special needs
Parent or caregiver

Following are the chance that gives rise to increase in child maltreatment
Failure to bond with the newborn
Being maltreated as a child
Using of drugs or alcohol during pregnancy
Experiencing financial difficulties

Relationship with friends and family may increase the risk of maltreatment as follows:
Poor physical or mental condition of a family member
Being isolated from the community
Violence between family members
Community and societal factors
Social and gender inequality
Limited housing or social support
High levels of unemployment
Easy access to alcohol or other kind of drugs
Lack of policies to curb child maltreatment
Prevention
Preventing maltreatment of children demands a multispectral approach. As per the statement of
Havnes and Mogstad (2015), an effective program that supports positivity can be implemented to
ensure proper prevention of maltreatment of the children
Visit to the parents by the nurses to provide knowledge and information
Education to the parents in groups regarding the knowledge increase in child
development
There are several ways that can be implemented to ensure that the efficacy of the work is rightly
maintained. The following rules can be applied in the mentioned context:
