Steel Structure Design for Road Bridge Construction

Introduction
The assignment is to design a steel girder to be used in constructing a road bridge across
drainage channel and cycle track as shown below.
Figure 1 showing the section for the proposed bridge.
The bridge will have a dual carriageway and a footpath as shown in the section of proposed
bridge below.

Design considerations
 The bridge is to be constructed across existing storm water drainage.
 No temporary or permanent works can be placed in drainage channel
 Approach ramps should be kept at minimum height.
The following loadings will be considered in design calculations
Permanent works loading is 9kN/m2
vertical traffic loading of 10kN/m2
footpath loading of 5kN/m2

Brief 4 solution
The client requires that the bridge should be safe during and after construction.
Engineers are involved with civil and infrastructural projects in many tasks, but we
mitigate risk above all activities. For the most part, in simple terms, we can think of this: how
can we eradicate or handle the particular unknowns and dangers arising from our projects?
The descriptive adjective ' design risk assessment ' was widely used to describe the
actions needed to address risk management. It does not, unfortunately, describe what is needed
and is linked to unnecessary documentation and bloated bureaucracy.
Safety in design and construction approach
The approach to be used in this case is ERIC. This is the suggested model mitigating project
risks. The acronym is used for, eliminate, reduce, inform and control (Development, 2019).
These have been followed in the design of bridge materials to be used.
The area across which the bridge will be constructed has hard rocks, sufficient for strong
foundations. This is evident by the previous use of the turner.

Construction of the proposed will not involve deep foundations. Human involvement will
be eliminated during deep excavations. When constructing structures with large design loads,
such as those related with bridges, deep foundations must be constructed. Some deep
foundations, such as concrete piles, are driven into the ground, while others are set up by
excavation and drilling (Roadsbridges.com, 2019).

Elimination of possible injuries during construction will be achieved by constructing bridge
when there are no storms expected.
Field engineers must reduce the possible injuries by providing personal protection to the
workers.
Some safety approaches have to be used are listed (Hse.gov.uk, 2019).
 Have the correct workers at the correct time for the correct job
 Sensitive work planning to handle the risks associated from beginning to end
 Consult with and discuss risks with workers and how they are managed
 Have the correct risk data and how it is managed
Conclusion
With everyone involved in the road and bridge - building market, safety is a main priority.
