Introduction
The assignment deals with the critical analysis of the statement, “it is better to rely on
stereotypes than to enter into a relationship with someone from another culture without any idea
of what they believe in”. The paper discusses the merits and the problems of the statement.
Merits of the statement
Stereotype means simplification of the process of making judgement and perception
about other people rather than dealing with the alternate stimuli (Walton et al. 2015). There is
the positive side to the statement given above in regards to workplace. In workplace stereotypes
occur when an individual is judged based on the assumptions or perceptions about the person’s
belongingness of group. When working in say group projects that require effective
communication and interaction with culturally diverse people, it is necessary to make
assumptions about behaviour he/she can accept or likely to think in a given moment. It is
possible by relying on stereotypes. It means that the stereotype help me assume what is present
in other’s mind. Thus, stereotypes are vital part of working with other group. In workplace,
when first meeting a new employee, one can gather information to develop cultural profile,
which can be generalised. This profile can be used for stereotyping to make perceptions and
assumptions about cultural believes and values of an individual. It may be used for diversity
management. It will make life more predictable and easy to understand (Schnurr et al. 2017).
Problems of the statement
Stereotyping is not always accurate and poses a problem in any organization. There is
high probability of getting misguided by inappropriate information during making of cultural
profile. Therefore, one may act differently towards a person that may offend him/her. It may not
