1Strategic Leadesrship and Stakeholder Management
Business ethics forms an integral part of an organisation. It can be applied in every
aspects of business conduct. In this essay the focus will be on a business dilemma which a
corporate leader is facing in his real estate business in Australia over the last three years. The
reason for facing such ethical issue will be discussed along with the ethical decision taken by
the leader.
The CEO of Aveo Group, an Australian property and investment group focused
mainly on retirement village ownership, faced an ethical business dilemma regarding
pollution when the residents of a retirement village property in northern part of Australia
complained about the lack of emission control in that property, causing air pollution
(Cavusgil et al.,2014). It was violating the government policies and was against what the
company promised to them. Every state and territories in Australia maintains its own laws
and policies to maintain the level of pollutants emitting. Being the CEO of an Australian
company, she has to follow the rules as air pollution can create global warming, one of the
serious condition the modern world is facing.
According to me, the CEO made a sound ethical decision by selecting the Character-
Based ethical decision-making model. I believe that according to the policies, provided
emissions in that property, as it will have a good impact on the company as well as all the
stakeholders.
From the above, the conclusion can be made that it is right to violate an ethical
principle for a betterment in ethical climate for others. To solve the ethical business dilemma
properly also symbolizes the quality of a strong and efficient leadership. Unethical business
practices will pollute and exhaust the market and harm the business for everyone in the long
run.
