NURSING ASSIGNMENT
Selection of the vulnerable population:
The population which has been selected for the discussion is the high risk mother or high
risk pregnancy and infants. Mothers are considered are at the high risk when there are
complications associated with the pregnancy which can pose negative impact on the health of the
mother or the fetus. High risk mothers are considered vulnerable because of their medical
condition which elevates the risk of miscarriage (James et al., 2017). Apart from high risk
mothers, infants are also selected as the vulnerable population. The immunity systems of the
infants are not well developed due to which they are more susceptible to any illness or injury
(Visscher et al., 2015).
Health disparity among the vulnerable population:
Health disparities are demarcated to the higher burden of injury, illness and disability
experienced by a group comparatively to another (Jones et al., 2019). In the case of high risk
mothers and the infants, the healthcare need is more as compared to another individual, which is
not provided to them. They possess high risk of illness, especially in the case of infants as their
immunity system is not fully developed and in the absence of the appropriate health care
facilities; they get easily affected by any chronic illness or injury.
Impact of culture and ethnicity:
Culture and ethnicity impacts the physiological and psychological health of the
vulnerable population. According to Tobin, Di Napoli & Beck (2018), the black American,
immigrant or refugee women who are pregnant possess high risk of harm or illness due to their

cultural aspects. Infants who belong to such population have lower life expectancy rate. Risk of
depression and other mental illness among such population is high due to cultural impact.
Strategies for effective communication:
Communication in the healthcare is commonly used for enhancing the health outcome of
the patients. By observing the health risk of the selected vulnerable population, it can be stated
that the nurse should communicate effectively to identify the risk of harm or the health related
concern. In the case of high risk mothers, the nurse should use different communication strategy
such as, listening, empathy, non-verbal communication and verbal communication (Webb,
2018). To elevate the effect of communication, open end question within the targeted group
should be used. In the case of infants, the parents were involved in the health promotion plan.
With the aid of different communication strategies such as, creating awareness among the
targeted population by the use of evidence based knowledge, understanding the needs and
concern of the population group, considering the health literacy, cultural factors of the group and
by using different forms of the tools to create awareness such as, brochures, pamphlets and
videos.
Nursing strategies:
From the above discussion, it can be stated that the cultural and religious factors of the
targeted population possess a negative impact on their physiological and psychological health.
Therefore, it is important for the nurse to consider the cultural aspects of the patient while
handling the patient. Rendering to the study performed by Repo et al. (2017). The cultural
background of the patient is considered to enhance the outcome of the treatment by the aid of
different strategies such as, considering the cultural factors by the help of effective

communication between the individual and the nurse. Nurse should gather knowledge and
enhance their learning regarding the culture of the patient. For enhancing the incorporation of the
culture information in the nursing process, the healthcare specialist who belongs to the same
culture has been incorporated in the treatment procedure.
Role of nursing:
Nursing is the profession which aims to increase the health outcome of the patient
suffering from any illness or injury (Bodenheimer & Bauer, 2017). The Nursing and Midwifery
Board of Australia has formulated several codes and conduct and registered nursing standard
with the aid of which nurse provides effective and safe care to the patient. In this case as
identified above, the pregnant individuals and the infants are at the higher risk of getting
effected, hence the primary aim should be to minimize the risk factor of the patient. In the above
discussion, the nursing strategies that can be implemented to manage the selected vulnerable
population is mentioned, however the registered nurse plays a significant role in the
implementation of the suggested strategies. In order to that the registered nurse has to engage in
an effective therapeutic relationship with the patient, which is characterized as Standard 2 of the
registered nursing standard developed by The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (2019).
After effectively engaging with the patient, the nurse should gather information about the risk
factors which is considered to be responsible for the health deterioration of the patient and then
process the information accordingly by relating it with the pathophysiology of the health
condition of the patient and incorporate the information in the care plan of the patient. The nurse
should identify the major cause which is responsible for the health disparity of the selected
vulnerable population, which is the need of additional care. The nurse and the other healthcare

staff should formulate strategies that can be used to minimize the health disparity by providing
safe and appropriate care to the vulnerable population as per their needs.
Impact of student’s cultural background:
In the healthcare, nurse has to handle patient from different culture which might get
affected by the cultural values and beliefs of the nurse. Conferring to the study performed by
Kuzma, Pardee & Darling-Fisher (2019), the cultural aspects of the nurse can hinder the
treatment procedure of the patients and can also lead to discrimination. English is not considered
as the primary language in most of the culture and hence as a result they are not able to speak or
understand English fluently, which hinders the communication between the nurse and the patient
leading to negative patient health outcomes. The cultural background of the patient can also lead
to discrimination which violates the ethical rights and principles of both the nurse and the
patient. Therefore the student should keep his cultural aspects aside while treating the patient
who belongs to the vulnerable population.
