BIOTECHNOLOGY
Part 1
According to Porter (1996), strategy means being different from others. It means to
purposely choose an opposite set of activity that is aimed at delivering unique set of values.
The essence of strategy is to perform tasks as well as activities that is different from the
rivals. If a strategy is not different then as mentioned by Porter (1996), it only remains a
marketing slogan that will not be able to withstand competition. The link between Corporate
Social Responsibility and competitive advantage is society. This link is created as both the
corporations as well as the society are mutually dependent on each other and that both
problems related to business as well as societal policies should follow the principle of shared
value (Porter & Kramer 2006). However, it is also essential to build a strong relationship
between corporate social responsibility as well as competitive advantage so that the strategies
that are involved in the process works well and without any hindrance. To make the above
link work it is necessary to create a feeling and relation of goodwill with the local
governments as well as other essential and vital constituencies (Porter & Kramer 2006). Thus
CSR and competitive advantage will work only when the strategies that are adopted by
organisations are good as well as efficient (Porter & Kramer 2006). Here comes the role of
the leader.
Leaders are the ones in the organisation who are given the challenge of adopting
sufficient as well as efficient strategies for the growth of the organisation. Leaders also try to
improve operational effectiveness as it is an essential aspect of every organisation. It also
essential to understand the importance of shared value within an organisation (Porter,1996).
Shared value should not be confused with personal values nor is it the existing values that the
firms use for their progress (Porter & Kramer 2011). Instead, shared value is a concept that
talks about expanding the total economy as well as the social value. Shared value at the same
time also recognises the social harms as well as weakness that commonly creates internal cost

for firms. Roche, Pharmaceuticals (Min, Desmoulins & Esposito 2017). Biotechnology and
Life Sciences is a pharmaceutical corporation that has adopted the concept of shared value
within their organisation. To create the concept of shared value within their organisation they
are trying to reconceive the products as well as the market that is achieved through
redefinition of the productivity through value chain that helps in the development of the
company (Min, Desmoulins & Esposito 2017). Shared value thus has helped the organisation
to choose between right and wrong methods of decision-making and at the same time has
helped the employees to make correct decisions. It has also unified the organisation (Min,
Desmoulins & Esposito 2017).
Part 2
By reading about the above concepts the readers thoughts regarding strategy and
innovation has changed. From the readings as well as other sources it was concluded that
innovation is something that defines new ideas while strategy is something that is adopted to
shape the future of an organisation or any plan (Johnson, 2016). Innovation makes new ideas
useful. Innovation is always new while a strategy may or may not be new that is strategy can
be old as well (Biemans, 2018). Therefore, it can be said that there exist a dichotomy between
strategy as well as innovation.
Part 3
One of the most interesting thing that is learnt after answering the above questions is
that strategy is different from innovation and that corporate social responsibility and
competitive advantage are linked with each other through a fine thread of society. After
reading the resources it was realised that strategy can be innovative but innovation cannot be
strategic (Varadarajan, 2018). A good strategy helps in advancing the organisation and at the
same time generate value for the organisation that in turn helps in creating competitive
