Statement of Purpose (SOP)
Protect and strengthen the well-being of people and families in Sheffield, focusing on the most
vulnerable
A person’s mental health and other common mental disorder are shaped via economic,
physical and social environments operating at different stages of life (Reiss 2013). Social
inequalities are one of the prime risk factors associated with mental disorders. Greater the
inequality, greater is the inequality in health (Allen et al. 2014). The disadvantaged and poor
people suffer disproportionately. However, the group of population residing in the middle of the
social gradient are also affected. This SOP aims to take actions to improve the condition of
everyday life starting from birth, towards the progression of early childhood, adolescence and
older age (Allen et al. 2014).
I think action throughout these life stages will help to provide opportunities for
improving mental health and wellbeing of the population. This action plan goes in accordance
with the reports published by Allen et al. (2014), that states that mental is directly linked with the
physical health of a person and proper improvement plan for uplifting health and wellbeing of
the population with a special mention to the vulnerable group will help to reduce the inequalities
in physical health.
I would like to suggest that such actions are required to be universal, across the entire
society and must be proportionate with the requirement. Policy framing at all levels of
