Instructions:
Complete all of the questions in the template below in reference to the
article that you have selected. Ensure that you have selected the correct
template (quantitative or qualitative) to match the research method in the
article that you have selected.
Where there is a Yes/No option in the question, delete the option that
does not apply.
Question 1: Study Purpose/Question
(a) Did the study have a clearly stated purpose/research question?
Yes, this research paper has clear mention of the primary purpose of the research
process.
(b) Explain your response below:
This paper clearly identified that the fact that primary aim of this paper is to identify
the reason due to which a specific section of parents not willing to immunize their
children. Therefore, a clear mention of this paper that is exploring the ways that is
associated with the parents and their perception about immunisation with
discussion about perceived risks and benefits has been mentioned in this paper.
Question 2: Relevance to nursing/midwifery practice
(a) Explain how this question was relevant to nursing/midwifery practice.
The research article by Ward et al. (2018, p. 1117) has identified an issue which is
easily relatable to the nursing practice. As mentioned by Raya et al. (2017, p. 222),
immunisation is a preventive measure that are implemented in the healthcare
facilities, or in community or society levels. As per Rosen and Goodson (2014), it is
the duty of nursing professionals to encourage vaccination among healthcare
professionals so that they can prevent transmission of critical healthcare conditions.
Further, it is their duty to make people in community understand the seriousness of
the situation and then implement the strategies so that parents can understand the

importance of children to get immune. Therefore, this paper chosen the research
question which is relevant to the nursing and midwifery practice.
Question 3: Ethics
(a) What were the possible risks of participating in the study?
The participation in this research study did not have any serious complications due
to which the participants could have affected. As mentioned in the paper, all the
parents that participated in the process were interviewed extensively so that their
inclusion in the process could be justified. Further, the parents that did not took part
in the process were asked to provide their justification so that their perspective to
the process could be assessed and consequently action could be taken.
(b) Were these risks clearly identified by the authors?
Yes / No
As participation in the research process did not had any risk, the author has not
mentioned any in the research process.
(c) If risks were identified by the authors, how did they propose to minimise risk?
No such risk or risk mitigation strategy has been mentioned by the researchers in
the research process.
(d) Did the authors state that they had approval from an ethics committee to
undertake the study?
Yes, the author clearly mentioned about the ethical committee approval that
they avail for the conduction of the process effectively.
Yes / No
(e) How did the authors obtain informed consent from participants?
They collected consent by providing them a formal document for the process.
(f) Did you identify and potential risks associated with the study that were not
identified by the authors and if so, what were they?

One of the primary risk that could be identified from the study and that has not
been mentioned in the research article is changes in the parent’s attitude. It was
seen that majority of the parents in the Western Australia did not take their children
to the healthcare facility for immunisation and in such condition it is important for
the healthcare professionals to understand the reason and provide them with
education so that they starts immunisation process for the benefit of their children.
However, in this research, it was seen that parents, after understanding about the
possible risk or concern that the non- vaccinated children could have, they justified
their reason of not accepting immunisation in the place of accepting the process for
their benefit. As per Ward et al. (2018, p. 1121), this situation could be one of the
critical condition as depending upon this the healthcare and wellbeing of the
community and associated children were decided. Therefore, this is one of the
critical concern and important factor that the healthcare professionals did not
focused as well as the researchers did not mentioned in the research paper.
Question 4: Study Methodology
(a) What the chosen methodology for this study?
The study design that has been selected for this research process is qualitative method as
per which, the study included interview process and conducted these interviews with
parents that were unwilling to take part in the immunisation process.
(b) Was this choice suitable for the given research problem/question?
Yes / No
Yes, as the primary aim of the research was to understand the perspective of the parents
that did not accepted the vaccination process for their children, qualitative process was
effective for the research process.
(c) Explain your response to (b):
As per Kendall (2014), surveys are the type of qualitative study that is conducted to
understand the reason of any concern within a community of multiple number of people. In
this aspect, it is important for the healthcare professionals also to conduct surveys and
interviews within a community to understand their concerns and hence, it was seen that the
researchers conducted qualitative study for the completion of the research. As the primary
aim of the research process was to understand the concern due to which the parents
opposed the immunisation process for their children, conduction of interviews would provide
them with a clear picture so that they can conduct the process effectively. This is the
research the research methodology selected for the research question was effective for the
process.

Question 5: Data Collection/Rigour
(a) Describe how the data was collected for this study (interview, observation, etc).
For the collection of qualitative data, the researchers conducted interviews with the parents
of both immunised and non- immunised children so that both of their perspective about
immunisation process could be effectively understood.
(b) Did the researchers provide the participants with the opportunity to check the collected
data
or research findings?
Yes / No
No, the researchers did not provide the participants or the parents of immunised
and non- immunised children with the ability to check the collected data obtained
from the interview process.
(c) Did the researchers continue recruiting people to the study until data saturation
was reached?
Yes / No
No. the researchers recruited parents after conducting inclusion criteria related
interview so that their eligibility in the research process could be effectively
understood and then included those set of participants in the research method.
(d) Did the study use multiple data collection methods (eg collect data from more
than one source)? Yes / No
No, the research collected data from one source which is collected from the
conducted interview with the parents of non- immunised and immunised children in
the healthcare facilities of Western Australia.
(e) Explain how the points in (b), (c) and (d) contribute to the trustworthiness of the
overall research findings.
