INTRODUCTION
Global citizenship can be defined as an idea that all the people involved in it have some
basic rights and civic responsibilities towards the wider world. National identity can be defined
as the person’s identity or a sense of belongingness for his or her nation. It is a sense of nation as
a cohesive whole in which each person has their own culture, values, traditions and thoughts.
Present study will provide an essay on whether global citizenship should be replaced with global
identity or not.
MAIN BODY
Should global citizenship replace national identity
Each person in the global world have some rights and civic obligations. Global citizen is the
person who understands their responsibilities in wider world. Individual actively participate in
community development with others (Banks, 2017). There is huge difference between national
and global citizenship. As individual gets the birth in one nation and gets the identity of that
geographical area. There are many people those who have different perspectives about global
citizenship and they consider themselves as global citizen from various aspects. Few people
believe that getting engaged into global issues and developing relationship with other culture
people make them global citizen (Yemini and Maxwell, 2018).
Globalization and nationalism are two essential aspects of contemporary world.
Nationalism can be defined as feeling of someone or sense of pride as they are part of particular
country (Goren and Yemini, 2016). It is an international ideology that supports in promoting the
culture of any nation across the world. When an individual moves out from their home nation
then also person cheers for that region or get attached with the place where they have taken birth.
Most of the politicians use the world nationalism for showing patriotism and their national unity.
Globalisation believes that there is no boundary, as there is only one globe hence all the
people are part of this wider world. They all contribute directly or indirectly in development of
globe. Global nationality should be replaced with national identity, In the recent time most of the
people like to be called as global citizens first (Rosanvallon, 2016). Global citizenship does not
hamper person’s identity or belongings with certain nation but it is an addition to the nation
identity. One person fulfils their obligation for their home country but through global citizenship
individual feels connected with whole globe and fulfil their responsibility towards the world. In
the recent time population of emerging countries see themselves as global citizen more than

national person. As it makes them able to get connected with entire world directly. Some people
belong from backward areas and have weak national identity. Due to this, they get less respect in
the nation and sometimes face discrimination as well. Global citizenship may help in minimising
such kinds of issues and maintaining equality in the global (Yemini and Maxwell, 2018).
It is argued that language, religion, cuisine are some most important aspects of national
identity. Global citizenship sometimes can adversely affect oral traditional and cultural values of
any country. Hence it should not be replaced with national identity. People have attachment with
their national identity, they celebrate it as well. Through having separate national recognition
individual can spread the information about uniqueness of particular region and can create a
unique world (Boni and Calabuig, 2017).
Replacement is the term in which one thing takes place in the place of another, when
national identity gets replaced with global citizen then it would damage the actual origin of one
person. It should not be replaced, as person has to fulfil their responsibilities towards the globe
but replacement is not the right action in this manner. As it may damage the cultural values of
one individual (Yemini and Bronshtein, 2016).
Global citizenship should be replaced with national identity. Global education system
contributes towards achievement of global citizenship. Now people behave more responsible and
fulfil their duties towards environment, social. This concept is much broader than nationalism. If
individual is fulfilling their obligations towards the global world, then indirectly person has
contributed in national development as well hence replacement of national identity with global
citizenship does not hamper the nationalism hence it should be replaced with global citizenship.
Global citizenship does not mean that person will lose their national identity, it just
means national identity comes after global community membership. The concept of global
citizenship fits in the criteria of emancipation (Kisby, 2017). This term pays close attention on
maintaining equality and sharing same values among all people in the world. Global citizen
understands the actual work in world and individual gives respect the diversity. Global citizens
are aware with their duties towards wider world and they fight first for the social injustices.
National identity sometimes restricts the person to think for global development whereas global
citizenship encourages sustainable development of world. Hence global citizenship should be
replaced with national identity (Torres, 2017).

Global citizenship concept is highly related with globalisation and provides numerous
economic opportunities to individuals (Yemini and Maxwell, 2018). Multi-cultural settings
make people aware with other cultural values and they start respecting other values as well. This
kind of elements minimise biasness and help in ending the extreme issues of world such as
gender inequality, poverty etc. It is essential that all the nations decide their path by own, there
should not be any kind of restrictions. Global citizenship does not end the nationalists or national
interest of any person. It just adds new things through which person can contribute well in
community development in the globe (The rise of global citizen and why that’s so important for
humanity, 2019).
Gender, culture, language are essential factors that shape an individual identity. Most of
the people give more priority to their religion over nationalism. Indonesia is the place where
national ties are weaker than local communities (Banks, 2017). Their attitude towards their
religion reflect their living style as well. Global citizenship minimises such kind of
dependencies and see entire world as single globe where each person is equal and supporting
each other. Replacement of national identity with global citizenship helps in handling global
challenges and finding solutions that may support in development of each individual (Rise in
globalism doesn’t mean the end for nationalists, 2017). When person becomes a global person
then individual indirectly fulfil their national responsibilities as well. But when person protects
their national identity then individual fails to fulfil their duties towards the wider world. Hence
global citizenship should be replaced with national identity, it will help in encouraging
nationalism and developing the globe as well. Global citizenship helps in making the worldwide
moment and finding the alternative solutions to the more challenging problems such as weather
change, terrorism and world war (Yemini and Maxwell, 2018). It can assist the people of the
individual nation in making the world more peaceful. If every citizen become global citizen then
there will be no disturbances, fights and discrimination cases. Every individual can live in the
word peacefully. Even this aspect can help in reducing the discrimination and biasness that exists
in the nation. It will make world a better place to live.
Global citizenship is a way of living that makes an individual realises that the world is an
increasing complex web of connections and interdependencies. It makes people realise that their
choices and repercussions have the impact on community and people locally and nationally. In
this the citizens work for making the world as a better place. The citizen takes an active role in

the community and work with others to make planet more equal, fair and sustainable. But it is
important for an individual to note that the global citizenship must be replaced with the national
identity as the individual must not belong to the certain nation rather they must be connected
with the whole world and make world a better place to live. It has been analysed that more than
half of the people living in the emerging countries such as Nigeria, Peru and China has identified
themselves as the global citizens. But in contrast it has also been analysed that the citizens living
in richer countries such as UK, USA, Germany and Russia less than 50% of people has identified
them as the global citizens. It has been analysed that global citizenship can assist the people in
solving the major problems that has been emerging in the world. All the people of the world can
together come up and find the solutions to the problems like climate change, terrorism,
discrimination and basic human rights to which most people are deprived of. This can help them
in making world a better place to live. The world can become peaceful after having a feeling of
being global citizen.
This aspect needs to be change in the individuals as there are more serious concerns in the
world like refugee crisis, extreme poverty, climate that needs to be looked upon by the people of
world. Only this attitude of individuals can make world a better place. People must be filled with
the feeling of that they are the citizens of the world (Banks, 2017). All the environmentalists,
internet libertarians, multicultural educators and voracious capitalists has come up with the idea
that the identity which is national does not matter anymore. The word requires the state free
citizenship of the globe. If this feeling is been implemented in every individual then there will be
no war, no terrorism and no refugee problems. It has also been analysed that mega problems such
as climate change and financial problems have no boundaries (Goren and Yemini, 2016). They
must be the major concerns with all the nations and all the citizens living over there. Global
citizenship can also provide the people with economic and globalised opportunities. People while
being a global citizen can learn about different culture of different country. This can act as a
career opportunity for them. One of the most prominent thing which is making global citizenship
weaker is the religion (Torres, 2017). People in the world only think about fulfilling their
religion aspects that makes them forget the concept of being a global citizen and making the
world a better place to live. While other groups see it as a response to the experience of
migration and learning to live with a multi-cultural setting.

People must be concerned about the worldwide impact of their acts. They must take care of
their carbon footprint. Individual in order to be a global citizen must shape their actions
according to the needs and demands of world. People of the globe must realise their share
responsibilities for the conditions in the other country (Kisby, 2017). They must have an idea
about the culture and history of the other countries. This version of global citizenship is mainly a
form of self-justification. It allows economic elites to forget that their corporations were made
possible by the investments and institutions of actual nations - and to shed responsibility for the
health of those nations. But individual must also not forget the cultural values, norms and
thoughts they follow. They must be used by them in making a world a better place to live
globally. This aspect can reduce the war, terrorism and all the miss-happenings which is been
happening in the world.
CONCLUSION
From the above study it has been summarised that the global citizenship has replaced the
national identity. It has helped the individuals in making the world a better place to live. This has
helped the citizens of the nation in removing the terrorism and stopping the war which has been
on going. But the individuals have not forgotten their individual identity, cultural values and
thoughts. It has also been analysed that the richer countries such as USA and UK do not think of
themselves as global citizens. They think themselves as the citizen of their nation only. It has
also been analysed from the report that to be a global citizen one must realise the impact of their
actions on the world.
