The transcultural nursing theory developed by Madeleine Leininger describes the goal of
nursing is to provide effective care with respect to cultural values, practices and goals. It helps
the nurses to predict and develop the healthcare frameworks that would enable them to provide
effective care to patients based on their cultural backgrounds (McGee, 2013). By determining the
culture of the patient, the nurse can predict the effective interventions that will be comply with
the culture and the customs of the patient, thereby providing patient satisfaction and effective
care.

Transcultural nursing is important part for the current healthcare systems. Because of the
increase in multi-cultural population in the United States, the nurses are challenged with the task
to provide individualistic and holistic care to the patients. By understanding patient culture,
customs and rituals, the nurse can provide effective care.

Florence Nightingale and Margaret Sanger are two of the nursing figures of the
nineteenth century, whose contributions have inspired my nursing career. According to Florence
Nightingale, touch is a way of care for patients and Margaret Sanger specialized in providing
education and information to women regarding sex education and health.

specialized skills and judgements. The registered nurse has to take responsibilities and accept
accountability for practicing within the legal guidelines. The nurses cannot carry out medical
diagnosis and prescribe medications. The nursing practice act of Alaska enables nurses to assess
problems, carry out counselling and teaching clients to maintain health. RNs can carry out
medical diagnosis and prescribe medications.

guidance of a RN. Unlicensed personnel are employed by RNs. RNs can provide comprehensive
assessment, LVNs can provide focused assessment, while unlicensed personnel can only collect
information from school settings.

practice rules involve that the nurses can provide medical diagnosis, prescribe medications and

RNs can advocate the role of an scientist, detective and healing environment manager
with the help of specialized knowledge or skill or judgment, assess problems, advocate
supervision and care to the patients. LVNs cannot function as a scientist or detective but can play
the role of a healing manager. Unlicensed personnel cannot function as a scientist, detective or
healing manager, but can provide care under the supervision of RN (Www.ncsbn.org, 2017).

Two provisions of the American Nurses Association (ANA) code of ethics are: “The
nurse’s primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or

and rights of the patient” (Matthews, 2012). According to the first code, the nurse should remain
committed to the patient and the family members and provide unique care depending upon the
individual, involving the patient in the care plan and obtaining acceptance and resolving any

conflicts. The second code describes the duty of the nurses to safeguard patient rights, prevent
unwanted intrusion, confidentiality of information. The patient should be provided with the
safety of the interventions and any precautions to be taken.

The 2 provisions influence my nursing practice by enabling me to remain committed to
the patient care and also provide effective healthcare plan. A nursing error made by me involved
the application of wrong medication to a patient.

A professional organization plays an important role in promoting nursing leadership,
decision making, and professional development of the nurses. It is the duty of the organization
to provide an environment full of energy, ideas and proactive work required to maintain a
healthy profession that works for the benefit of the nurses, patients and society in general. It is
the duty of the organization to advocate motivation through the application of moral and ethical
principles, influence policies that can lead to resource allocation for the promotion of nurses and
nursing. The ethical code with interpretative statements for nurses can provide a framework that
can be used by the nurses to carry out decision-making, ethical analysis and leadership.
