CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
A significant development in Information Technology has brought several revolutions in
many industries. Hence, benefit of the same has also being gained by mobile gaming sector.
Herein, it is examined that in today's scenario, mobile gaming industry is gaining immense
popularity (Wetzel, Blum and Oppermann, 2012). It is due to the presence of many factors
among which the major one is smartphone that can be considered as one such factor which is
making this industry able to gain higher profits. Prior to the development of smartphone, there
were general and basic games that have been introduced in the mobile phone such as Snake.
According to the viewpoints of Irwin, Kline and Streeter, (2013), major aim of these games is to
reduce the boredom of individuals and to entertain them. In the year 2000, mobile game has

Mandeville and Crossley, (2016) found that there is high level of revolution that takes
place in the gaming industry. In previous years, people play on computers and TV through the
means of video games. Along with this, higher technological advancements have made major
contribution in the mobile gaming industry. Snake was the only game which was played by
smartphone users earlier. Hence, by taking into account the boredom of players, there are several
games which have been introduced by Japanese in the mobile phones in 2000 and 2003. It

develops interest level of the player to a significant level. On the basis of such aspect, it can be
said that ICT advancements has brought substantial changes in the mobile gaming industry in a
highly positive way.
2.3 About Pokémon Go
Neustaedter and Judge, (2012) asserted that Pokémon Go is one of the most popular
location based games in the present scenario. It is free to play location based reality game which
is developed by Niantic. People can play such game by downloading it in their mobile. Thus, for
playing this, players do not have to incur any financial cost. However, it is to be critically
evaluated by Suess and Mody, (2016) that people can play and enjoy the game of Pokémon Go
when they have IOS and android devices. In July (2016), such game was introduced by its owner
in the selected countries. In this game, GPS device is used by the player to locate, capture, battle
and train virtual creatures which is known as Pokémon.
As per the viewpoints of Reinhardt and Heinig, (2016) for playing Pokémon Go, one
needs to catch it firstly. Individuals play this game by opening such app on the mobile phone. In
this, phone will buzz if Pokémon is nearby. Thus, by tapping the Pokémon map, player can
switch for catching the interface. Rossitto, Barkhuus and Engström (2016) presented that
Pokémon Go game also helps in identifying the extent to which it is easy for the player to find
Pokémon through the means of colour. For instance, Green colour indicates easiest, yellow
intermediate and red implies that it is highly difficult for the player to catch Pokémon. In

addition to this, power of Pokémon can be found at different CP levels. Stardust and Pokémon’s
specific candy are two main CP's which can be undertaken by the player. In this game, player
makes use of Pokémon’s candies for raising its combat power level.
In accordance with the viewpoints of Lai and et.al., (2016), different Pokémon are found
at distinct places. In this, player can enhance the level of character by play and crossing the
everylevel of game. There are several levels which turn up the character of Pokemon Go include
fighting at a gym, visiting pokestops etc. In this, player enjoys the gifts when he reaches at a new
level. On the basis of this aspect, once player reaches at level five then he/she has the chance to
choose one from three coded fractions. Such coded fractions include red team Valour, yellow
team instinct and the blue team mystic. By selecting one fraction, player can conduct battle with
other trainers in the gym.
Suominen (2016) stated that gym is in-game locations which is tied with the major real
areas of world namely Bryant park fountain or time square. It is the place where player can battle
with other trainers. If player held gym by fraction then he has chance to select single Pokémon

2.4 Factors that influence the player of play Pokémon Go
In accordance with the viewpoints of Bressler and Bodzin, (2013), youngsters and
teenagers are the one who take high level of interest in Pokémon Go. Moreover, it is the most
famous cartoon show which child sees in their childhood. It is one of the main aspects which
attracted people or players to play such game. It is one of the main causes due to which such
game is highly popular among youngsters and teenagers. However, Neustaedter and Judge,
(2012) critically evaluated that such game uses extreme battery power. The reason behind this is
that such game makes use of multiple functions of player’s phone. In this, players of such game
has to carry power bank with themselves.
From assessment, Wetzel, Blum and Oppermann, (2012) assessed that Pokémon Go is
the game which completely involves individuals in it, that is, mentally as well as physically. In
this, player feels that he/she is on the place of Pokémon. It evolves feeling among the players
specific candy are two main CP's which can be undertaken by the player.
If player held gym by fraction then he has chance to select single Pokémon
and train it in against to the other members of team. Under this, player has an opportunity to earn
high bonus and thereby, getting more poke coins (Lai and et.al., 2016). Further, battling in

that all incidents are occurred with themselves rather than the creature. Personification is the
major factor which is felt by the player to a large extent (5 Reasons Pokemon Go Is So Popular,
2016). In such a game, individual assumes that he/she plays a specific role and affected from it to
a significant level. Thus, it may also be served as a role play which is conducted through mobile
devices. Reinhardt and Heinig (2016) criticized this game as due to this, life of the player gets
negatively affected in terms of safety concern. For example, on releasing such game, one
person's dead body is floating on the river. Moreover, with the aim to catch pokemon the person
lost his attention to the large extent.. Along with this, there are several other individuals who
suffered with minor injuries due to this game. In this regard, it can be stated that loss of focus of
people is the major drawback which made the popularity of such game in negative direction. For
instance, with an aim to catch rare Pokémon, it may be possible that player would avoid his most
important work.
According to the viewpoints of Rossitto, Barkhuus and Engström (2016), Pokémon is
highly popular among the people who love this show in their childhood. Moreover, this game
will provide opportunity to the players to play it through their mobile phones and capture the
creatures which are invisible to everyone. In this, it seems that there are lots of people who are
highly connected with each other through this game. In this way, such game facilitates high level
of interaction among the people to a great extent. On the critical note, Wesley and Barczak
(2016) said that such game also affects the relationship of people negatively. Moreover, once
individuals get addicted to this game then they are not able to devote their time in the important
things or activities. Further, addiction towards it may also develop mental illness among people.
Mandeville and Crossley, (2016) found that the game of Pokémon Go develop creativity
or innovation skills among players. It allows individuals to play this game with new experience.
In addition to this, player feels that he plays in the real world. This is turn develops time
management skills of people to a significant level. In this, individual focuses on managing time
while catching the creatures. Along with this, it enhances social interaction among people.
Moreover, for playing this game, people prefer to visit different places of the world with an aim
to capture more creatures or Pokémon. All these aspects attract player to play Pokémon and
spend more time on it. However, Sun and Lee, (2015) argued that individuals can play such

influence players to play the game of Pokémon. This aspect develops the interest level of
Pokémon lovers. Along with this, such game will also provide information to the players about
different types of Pokémon. In this way, with the desire to get in-depth information, Pokémon

that such game places direct negative impact on the studies of teenagers and youngsters.

Due to this, study aspect of students is badly affected. This is also the main reason due to which
parents of teenagers restrict them to play this game. Hence, by considering all above mentioned
aspects, it can be said that there are several factors which attract people to play the game of
Pokémon Go. Apart from this, some negatives are also present which affect the significance of
such game. Moreover, it directly places impact on the life of people.

drawbacks which influence the importance of location based games. Moreover, location based
games such as Pokémon go influence people to devote their huge amount of time in their mobile
phones. Due to this, players are not able to spend much time with their family members and
other relatives. Hence, after sometime, people feel that their social life is completely lost due to
the use of location based mobile games. Wetzel, Blum and Oppermann (2012) presented their
views and said that location based mobile games are also the cause of eye problems in players.
When players continuously see mobile phone for playing location based games then it results in
low eyesight of them. Moreover, rays of mobile phones negatively affects the eyes and health of
human-beings.
However, Wetzel, Blum and Oppermann (2012) argued that number of accidents are
significantly increased after the development of location based games. Reason behind this is less
attention of people while playing the game. Moreover, location based games are played by
individuals through the means of mobile phones. In this situation, when players continuously
make focus on mobile phones then there is the possibility that they will suffer from any injury or
accident. However, it is critically evaluated by Bressler and Bodzin (2013) that location based
games hampers the productivity level of youngsters and teenagers to a large extent. Moreover, in
this, students spend their most of the time in playing such game rather than making focus on
studies (Advantages and Disadvantages of Pokémon Go, 2016). This in turn affects the future
growth and development level of students to a large extent.
By making evaluation of data, Serino and et.al., (2016) found that travelling expenses of
players are increased to a significant level. Moreover, for playing location based games like
Pokémon Go,player has to roam here and there. This in turn may result in the cost of high petrol,
restaurants and hotel expenses. It is necessary for the player to visit different places for catching
creatures. In this way, it may lead to high expenses and thereby affects the daily life of
individuals. Reinhardt and Heinig, (2016) also said that location based games may also create
problem of addiction among people. Habituation or psychological state may also affect the health
of individuals in terms of physical and mental. Along with this, in order to play such games more
effectually, individuals do not emphasize on surroundings. For instance, players of location
based games are also ready to take risk with an aim to get bonus. This aspect clearly shows that
there is the possibility that individuals will lose his/her life due to dangerous situation.
2.6 Ways for mitigating the limitations of location based game
Sun and Lee (2015) stated that there are several limitations which affect the popularity of
location based games. Increasing number of accidents is one of the major limitations which
places negative impact on the potential players of location based games such as Pokémon Go. In

order to overcome such problem, Niantic should provide players with radium badge which will
indicate them that there is some danger. For this purpose, gaming company needs to put sensor in
such batches. Along with this, firm also needs to inculcate lighting feature on it which will
provide indication to another person who is in front of the player. Hence, by taking into
consideration such measure, accidents can be reduced to a significant level. However, it is to be
critically evaluated by Wetzel, Blum and Oppermann (2012) that such kind of batches will limit
the possibility of accidents to some extent. For example, players enter in the busy streets where
lots of vehicles are there. In this, if someone drives rashly or fails to stop the vehicle then it may
result in injury to another person. Hence, gaming company can reduce the number of accidents
by developing awareness among players through campaign. Niantic can overcome such problem
by placing guidelines in relation to cautions on social networking sites, newspaper, television,
etc.
Celino (2015) suggested that mobile phone operators can reduce the probability of
accidents by sending message to the player. This is also the most effectual way which helps in
reducing the number of accidents to a large extent. According to the viewpoints of Fredericks,
(2016) location based games may result into lower eyesight problem among the players. In this,
author suggested to the gaming company that it should provide information to the players about
3D speculators. This in turn protects players from harmful raises and thereby offers amazing
experience to them. Moreover, 3D speculators provide players with better visual and playing
experience. Hence, it is one of the most effectual ways which can be undertaken by the gaming
companies in order to overcome such problem. However, Mueller and Isbister (2014) argued that
location based games make player isolated from their social life such as from friends and family
members. Moreover, for getting high bonus in terms of Pokémon coins, players spend most of
their time on catching Pokémon. Due to this, players do not spend their time with friends and
family members. This problem can be overcome only when players themselves understand the
importance of their work. Along with this, if management restricts employees to play this game
within organization then productivity can be maximized.
In addition to this, mobile companies also need to manufacture system in such a manner
which makes use of less battery as high battery usage is one of the main drawbacks of location
based mobile games (5 Ways to Improve Pokémon GO from a Location-based Game Designer,

CHAPTER 3: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.1 Introduction
Research methodology consists of systematic process with the help of which scholar
collects data for its study (Research methodology, 2016). In other words, it can be said that
research methodology depict the way of applying the research methods in the field of study. In
dissertation given chapter have significant importance, this is because with the help of it
researcher can prepare an outline for conducting its study upon specific topic. Thus, through this
way formulated objectives of the study has been met.

Research philosophy is the belief which explains that how data in relation to the
particular topic has been collected and analysed. In addition to this, it can also be said that
research philosophy basically deals with the source and development of knowledge. Therefore, it
helps in developing knowledge with respect to the particular topic. It is through this way only,

several types such as positivism and interpretivism (Short and et.al., 2012). The first philosophy
is of positivism and it is based on the context that only factual knowledge can be gained by the
scholar through observation. In the given type of philosophy the main role of researcher is to
gather the data for its study and draw interpretation from it. This philosophy is thoroughly based
on the quantifiable observation.
Besides this, interpretivism is being regarded as another research philosophy. This
philosophy involves scholar for the purpose to interpret the result of the conducted study. In
other words, it can be said that interpretivism philosophy helps in integrating the interest of
human in the conducted study. In addition to this, the given philosophy is thoroughly based on
the naturalistic approach for collecting data which are as interview and observation. Furthermore,
the researcher of the study which make use of given philosophy also take help from the
secondary method of collecting data (Kitchin and Tate, 2013).
In the current study which is based on the topic of assessing the factors which influence
the player to play Pokémon Go interpertivism philosophy has been taken into consideration. The
main reason behind using this is that the philosophy does not possess any hypotheses. In addition
to this, with the use of given method scholar of the present study can get in-depth information
about the topic upon which it is conducting its study. Thus, it is by complying with given type of
activity only the objectives which are formulated for current study has been met.
3.3 Research approach
The manner upon which scholar tend to conduct its study upon the specific topic is being
called as research approach. The research approach is basically is of two type and for the

be said that when researcher moves its study from general to specific then in the given situation
deductive research approach has been applied by it (Farrokhyar and et.al., 2014). In deductive
approach, researcher at first formulates hypothesis on the basis of existing theory and afterwards
it makes the decision about several tests which is being used by it in order to test the formulated
hypotheses. Hence, at the end researcher will have to make a decision that whether it should have

However, a completely different approach is being followed by the scholar of the study in
the case of inductive research approach. In this approach, researcher does not formulate
hypotheses. Thus, herein scholar uses aim and objectives of the study as a base for conducting
whole analysis. Hence, herein researcher moves its study from specific to general. In inductive
approach, scholar formulates new theory on the basis of observation which is being conducted by
it. In the study of assessing the factors which influence the player to play Pokémon Go inductive
research approach has been applied (Denzin and Lincoln, 2011). It is due to the fact that the
study lacks hypotheses. Furthermore, with the use of given approach new theory in relation to
the given topic can be formulated by the scholar.
3.4 Research strategy
Research strategy formulates outline of whole study. It is the plan of action which gives
direction to researcher for conducting the study upon the selected topic. Thus, it communicates
the manner to perform study upon the particular research issues in an effectual way. Thus, it can
also be depicted that it is the type of general plan which helps in resolving all the answers which
are related with the respective study or examined research problem. However, it has been seen
that an effective research tactic will be selected by scholar if it has designed its aim and
objectives in an appropriate manner. As per the research onion, the research tactic is of several
types and it consists of case study, experiment, survey, grounded theory and action research.
These all mentioned tactics have their own pros and cons (Bryman, 2012). However, in the
current study which is associated with the topic of assessing the factors which influence the
player to play Pokémon Go, survey type of research tactic has been applied. In this context,
researcher will carry out detailed analysis upon the topic which is being chosen by it. The given
method will also enable researcher in the task to collect the views and opinions of the selected
sample of the study. Hence, through this way researcher can reach on to the main or basic
conclusion for its study. In addition to the with the help of survey technique, scholar of the study
effectively analyse the main research problem of the conducted study. Through this way, it can
guide its direction towards correct path or towards the final conclusion for the present study.
3.5 Research purpose
It depicts about the main objective behind the conducting study on the selected topic.
Herein, it is examined that it is very essential for the researcher that it should clearly specify the
purpose of doing the study upon selected topic. This is because, if this will not being done then
the case of inductive research approach.
This is because, if this will not being done then
in the given situation it will become very difficult for the scholar with respect to reach on to the
formulated aim and objectives of the study. However, it has also being examined that research
design does not give conclusive or the final answer to the research question.
The research purpose is of three type such as explanatory, exploratory and descriptive
etc. The researcher of the study make use of explanatory research design when it is more
interested in terms of assessing the cause and effect relationship between two varied variables
(Stanley, 2013). Furthermore, the researcher will make use of exploratory research design when
it is more interested in assessing different features which is related with the current study. But, in
the current study which is related with the topic of assessing the factors which influence the
player to play Pokémon Go exploratory research design has been taken into consideration. This
is used because the scholar of the current study is interested in generating insight into the current
situation. In addition to this, the sample which is collected for given study is small and it is due
to the presence of given aspect also descriptive research design has been used in the current
study. Moreover, by using this technique researcher can get insight into the research problem and
thus it can form an effectual conclusion for its study.
3.6 Data collection
Data collection is being consider as the process to gather and assemble information in
relation to the particular topic. In research, data collection tend to have significant importance.
Here, with the help of data collection methods researcher can collect number of data for its study.
Thus, the data which is being collected by it can be used in order to draw conclusion in related to
the selected topic under study. In accordance with the given context, there are two methods
examined with the help of which researcher can collect data for its study. It consists of primary
and secondary (Innis and et.al., 2012). When researcher does not take help from the previous
study and will assemble new data for its conducted study then it is being called by the name of
primary method of data collection. Secondary methods of data collection is just opposite to it.
This is because, in this method researcher do take help from the other scholars study. Through
this way, researcher prepares the base for its conducted study.
In the current study, researcher make use of both primary and secondary means of data
collection. Here, with an aim to collect the primary data researcher has formulated questionnaire.
The questionnaire framed possess both open and close ended type of questions. With the help of
given type of questionnaire, views and opinions of the respondents can be examined in more
formulated aim and objectives of the study. However, it has also being examined that research
design does not give conclusive or the final answer to the research question.

The questionnaire framed possess both open and close ended type of questions. With the help of
given type of questionnaire, views and opinions of the respondents can be examined in more
effectual way. Besides this, data for the present study has also being collected with different
secondary sources which consists of books, journals and online articles etc (Holloway and
Wheeler, 2013). Thus, by using the combination of these all given methods researcher can
effectively reach on to the aim and objectives of present study.
3.7 Sample and sampling
For the researcher, it is very difficult with respect to conduct its study upon whole
universe. This is because, if it is done then it will lead to develop number of complications in
front of researcher. Furthermore, this thing will also take lots of time of researcher which it
always lacks. It is due to the presence of given aspect, there is a need of collecting sample is
being arise among scholar. In this regard, it can be said that sample is the small part which
basically show that how whole thing should be looked like (Sample, 2016). On the other hand, in
other words it can also be stated that sample is the subset which should show the characteristic of
whole population. But, in case if this will not happen then it becomes very difficult for the
researcher in terms of drawing an effectual conclusion for the current study. Here, in order to
gather sample researcher will have to take help from different sampling technique. Thus, it can
be said that sampling is being regarding the systematic process with the help of which scholar
can collect data for its study. The sampling techniques are of two types such as probability and
non probability. However, in the current study which is related with the topic of assessing the
factors which influence the player to play Pokémon Go non probability sampling technique has
been used. In this respect, snow ball sampling technique has been used. In this technique, sample
for the study has been collected by forming chain (Gray, 2013). For example, researcher has
contacted with one person who play the game. Here, researcher will tell the respective individual
to suggest the name of other person who also play this type of game. Hence, through this way
sample for the current study has been assembled. Herein, with the use of this method 50 people
who play Pokémon Go game is being selected as the sample.
3.8 Data analysis
It is being consider as another most important element after data collection section.
Herein, for the researcher it is very necessary that it should make use of appropriate technique
for the purpose to make an analysis of collected data under study. Thus, data analysis is the task
to make or perform analysis of the collected data and hence draw interpretation from it. Herein,
with an aim to make an analysis of the collected data of present study, thematic analysis method
secondary sources which consists of books, journals and online articles etc (Holloway and
