INTRODUCTION
Study skills for higher education refers that skills and knowledge that are necessary to
have in student to manage all its academic activities, manage time and developing learning
strategies. This file will include the reasons for studying a degree at universities. Also this will
explain core academic skills hat can be developed by the students and its important in its
academic strategies. Further more study plan will be developed by the students in which short
term and long term goals also will be included. This will help the students to develop their skills
and knowledge that are necessary for them. In the second part of the report, this will identify the
importance of foundation year for students from wide participation background. Further more
key challenges that are being faced by the students will be explained. In this skills will be
explained that help the students top overcome some of the challenges in their foundation year.
All of these core skills and challenges will be include and explained.

1. Reasons for studying a degree at university
There are main reasons that the students want to study and get a degree from the
recognised universities. To get admission in recognised universities students have to face some
of the exams to study degree that help the students in their future academics and also help to get
a best job in reputed companies (Alam and McLoughlin, 2018). Main reasons for studying
degree at universities are:
very first and one of the main reason to study at universities to get degree from it, that the
recognised university provide the top and skilled teaching quality to their students. In this way
students get help to learn more and deeply for their specific subject area. Apart from the higher
skills and education knowledge, universities also help to provide the social life campus to their
students. As they get help to develop and enhance their social skills with how to behave with
people and they also get knowledge from the highly talented and skilled teachers or lecturer.
Another reason that the studenty study at universities is that, universities help to provide
the best job to their students. From the employment prospectus students study degree at
university. Big companies generally drive the campus ion the university this help the students to
get good salary package job.

Another reason is that, in the recognised university, various students from different
country also come. Students get chance to interact with each other and also get chance to learn
more language from different country people. This can maintain the relation with foreign
students (Assiter, 2017).
One of the main reason is that, lecturers of the universities have their different teaching
skills and techniques as they carry the research and teaching hand in hand. In this research has
been conduct by the students, that help the students to get detailed knowledge about the
particular subject area. And on the basis of this students get detailed and deep understanding of
the subject and can get job w easily in Universities.
2. Core academic skills can be developed by students
There are many core skills that are required to have and developed by the students, in
order to enhance their academic knowledge. These skills also help them to manage their all
academic work and activities that can also help them to get good marks in the examination.
These skills are:
Communication skills – This is the core skills that need to have in student (Cheng and
Wan, 2017). This help the students to communicate effectively with their teachers and also with
class mates. Th is help students to give effective presentation and other academic activities
conducted in university (De Corte, 2016).
Note taking - this also consider as the core skill, taking note from the class mates or
from the teacher is also a skill, that help students to learning and studying for their exams. Can
get good marks if they have notes.
Academic writing - this include the all the writing skills, ion which consist, essay
writing, project writing, assignment writing and mother that are required to make and write by
student to get extra marks in their internals and external marks.
Keeping track of assignment – keeping tack of the assignment is also one of the kills
that help the students to read and learn when they required. It is important to have by the students
because of this, students can learn topic and subject what they want to learn and to pass the
examination.
Presentation skill – This also be required by the students to have presentation skill in
them. This help students to give effective presentation on the particular topic. As this important

because giving effective presentation can help students to get extra marks which will be included
in their final academic report.

A . importance of foundation year for the students
As the main key objective of the foundation year program is to provide the technical and
professional skills at the basic level. This help the students to offer them good study skill and
contribute to widen participation to higher education group. This is the life long learning and also
help the students to progress and get honour degree from the university. There are many reasons
that foundation year is important for the students (Hasan and et.al., 2019). These are:
Better language proficiency – foundation program helps the students to get proficiency in the
different language course. This course of the different language help the students to enhance
their skills in language, in this way they can interact with different kind of the people from
different countries. This language proficiency will help students in future job to deal with
number of international clients. In this way it is important for the students. This course also help
to students to make improvement in their general English language and also English spoken.
This include the writing of the essay and all other academic writing skill. With the help of these,
students get high marks in their examination all categories (Importance of foundation course for
international students,2017).
Increased chances of admission to prestigious university – students who have completed their
foundation course are more considerably get admission in prestigious university. After having
degree from the prestigious university, students can get best salary package job in recognised
company. Most of the students only focus to compete there foundation program only to get
admission in high recognised university and start there under graduation education program.
Where they can get higher skills and knowledge and can continue their foundation knowledge to
become professional in their specific area. In this way this foundation program is important for
the students (King and Boyatt, 2015).

Fills the gap of knowledge between university and high school – as the all the education is
different from the different countries and also from state to state. In this teaching and learning
method also differ from teacher to teacher and students. Foundation program is designed in a
way that make up and get al the students up standard. They are being designed for all the
students at same level so that all the students can get the same level of the education and teaching
and can fill the gap of the higher education and upcoming university. This course help the
student to attain the level that all the students need to be improve in them self.
Make specialised in choosen field – As all the foundation courses are designed on one single
specific subject area and profession, and get admission in those specific area as according to the
interest of the students, they can be specialised and be profession in their choosen field. This will
help the students to work effectively when they study about their interested field. Students study
about the all the subject area with full interest, this help the students to get good marks in the
exams (Lai and Hong, 2015). Because of this their foundation will become strong, this will help
students to get better understanding of the field in the university and help them, to get job in
multinational company.
Get used to university style teaching – foundation program, help the students to get used to in
the university style teaching, when they are going to study in future course. As they are used to
in the university style teaching , then it become easy for the student to get familiar with the
teaching style, and students will easily get knowledge in their future study program. In this way
foundation program become important for the student to grab all their interested knowledge and
skill easily, that will help them in future course to get skilled and professional.
Reduce culture shock – As in the foundation program, number of students comes from the
different number of countries to study. This help the students to break their cultural shock and
help to build and maintain the relation with different cultural people or students. By the help of
the foundation program, student can build relation and learn to deal with other cultural people
and also to respect their views and opinion as well. This skill help students in their long term
career in office to deal with many other kind of people (Naqvi and et.al., 2018).
B. Key challenges facing in foundation year by students
Starting the foundation year by the students, help them to start their career in future to get
degree from the recognised universities whereas number of challenges also arises in front of

them to carry their career as well during the study of the different foundation program. Some of
the challenges faced by the foundation year students are:
Adjustment of new life – Whenever any student start their life and career via foundation
program, where they get study different courses which are differ from their higher study. In
which they have to face problem in adjust them self in different environment with different
people and overall different life. Students have to make their efforts in order to adjust them self
in they new life which they have choosen in form of getting foundation course (Puchumni,
Tungpradabkul and Magee, 2019).
Homesickness – Another challenge faced by the foundation year student is that, homesickness.
Most of the students who start their career in foundation course. They have to come to leave their
home and parents, so they have to face problem of homesickness and being live alone without
their parents. This thing create problem in their academic life and this problem of homesickness
strike very hard in the life of the student as they are strongly connected with their parents and
friends. They will take time to adjustment them self without their parents.
Pressure of studies – Another problem faced by the student is that pressure of studies, as
students have to study new different course and skills in their foundation course which they
never studied in their higher study (Douglas and et.al., 2015). As the number of subjects and
activities, academic writing and many more will be included in their academic study in
foundation program course. In this way the load and pressure of the study is being increased and
then it become the major challenges for the students during the foundation program course.
Cost of education and shifting – Another challenge faced by the student of the foundation
program is that, it become costly as student have to shift to new place to study the foundation
course. When they have to move for their foundation course, the cost of the education and also
the shifting cost including house rent, food and many more will be costly for the students. This
way have to suffer from the lack of money as well and b because of this they have to do part time
job after foundation program. And the academic life suffer because of this.
Finding new friends – As if the student shift or move to another place to get admission in
foundation program, they have to leave all their old friends and have to find new friends. It
become difficult for some student to find new friends and adjust with them. Most of the students
do not find them self comfortable with new friends. This challenge of finding new friend also
affect the students in their activity, they do not participate in any activity willingly and feel dull.

Time management – Time management is another challenge faced by the students that are come
to do foundation course program. As they do not have any idea about any thing, about their
study, activities and they are new to the city as well. They have to suffer in managing time. They
have to be plan according to their study and academic for all their activities and their personal
life. To plan all the assignments, essay and many other academics study on the time (Lai and
Hong, 2015).
Housing problem – If any student come to the new city to do foundation course. Main problem
to live. In this way the housing problem is one of the main problem that faced by the students.
They have to find rooms, hostel and house for their stay. And it is difficult to find new house and
room for student.
C. Study skills help the foundation year students to overcome challenges
As there are many learning skill that are important for the student to have in them, that
will help the students to get good marks in their academic exam and also help them to get their
short term and long term goals.
As the communication skill help the student to get new friends in the foundation course
program. This communication skill of the higher education will help to reduce the challenge of
find new friend in the new place. If student will effectively communicate wit other students in
their class then the student will attracted toward them and behave nicely with them. His become
easy to get new friend in the foundation course program in new place (Douglas and et.al., 2015).
Another is that, note taking skill and tracking record of all the assignment will also help
the students to get eliminate and reduce the pressure of the study. These skills not only reduce
the challenge of pressure of study but also help to management of the time by students. If
students keep the record and tract the assignments of all their subjects, then it will help them to
get easy access of the knowledge when they need like examination. Like this note taking skill
also help them to reduce pressure of study, if students have the notes of all the subjects then do
not have to be worry about what to study and how to study.
Academic writing skill and presentation skill also help to reduce the pressure of the
study from the students, good academic writing help the student in the foundation course to
effectively writing the assignment and essay. And this will reduce the tension of how to write
and manage their assignments and essay that can help them to get extra marks in foundation

course program. N this way presentation skills also help the students to reduce their study
pressure (Travers, Morisano and Locke, 2015).
D. Conclusion
It has been concluded from the above analysis is that, students of the foundation year
have to face many number of the problem while doing the foundation course, but whereas this
also helpful; for the students and important to have foundation course as this give the
professional skill knowledge at basic level. This help the students to get easy admission in
recognised university, and from the university they can easily get the good salary packaged job.
To overcome all these challenges, high skills will help them to deal with. Like note taking skill,
track of all the assignments will help the students to reduce the load and pressure of the study of
the foundation course.
CONCLUSION
From the above essay it has been concluded that, it is important for the student to get
degree from the recognised university, this is important because it give the research detailed on
the specific subject and also help to get job easily in big multinational company. It also been
concluded that there are many learning skills for the students, as the adopt them, so it can be
helpful for the students to get better marks in their examination and will help them to be improve
their weak skills. From the study plan made by student it has been concluded that, some of the
learning skill like communication, presentation and other will help the students top get their long
term goals and reading, writing skill and other will help the student to get their short term goal
like clear the first semester examination. From the individual report, it also been concluded that
foundation course program is important for the students, as it help the student to be specialised
and become professional in their chosen filed. And also analysed that, while doing the
foundation course, students have to be faced some of the problem like time management,
education cost and study pressure and all these affect the students and its academic life.
