Critical Success Factors for Renewable Energy Projects in Oman

This research proposal aims to identify the critical success factors for renewable energy projects in Oman. The study will review literature and analyze government reports to understand the current scenario of renewable resources in Oman. The objective is to find factors that can facilitate the growth of renewable resources and identify potential resources that can be converted into renewable sources of energy. The methodology involves a mixed approach of qualitative and interpretive research. The data will be collected from secondary sources, and the research approach will involve interpretivism. The literature review includes research papers that have researched on technologies of renewable resources, on papers that researched on prospects of renewable energy and their establishments in similar environment as compared to the Sultanate of Oman.

Introduction
The Sultanate of Oman being located in the edge of the Persian Gulf shares a strategic
location. The Sultanate of Oman shares its boundary with the Other Arabian Countries
located in the gulf and is bounded with Saudi Arabia in the West, Yemen in the Southwest,
and United Arab Emirates to the Northwest. The Gulf of Oman offers an important location
that makes it a potential source of renewable energy. The sultanate of Oman being located in
the gulf has extensive potential for generating solar and wind power and it is time for the gulf
nations to understand the potential of renewable energy and invest in the research and
development of renewable energy resources. ‘His Majesty’ in his speech at the annual session
of the Council of Oman in 2008, stated that the government would emphasize the
implementation of the development policies based on the approved plans and will also look
towards diversifying the sources of income and press ore efforts in this matter. The sultanate
of Oman have since initiated various projects and implementation programs that aim at
finding the scope and possibility of renewable energy options in Oman and at the same
harness the potential resources to generate an alternate source of energy and income. The
changing dynamics of the energy generation around the world owing to the impacts of fossil
fuels and climate change it has to be kept in mind that the dependency on the fossil fuels
would only aggravate the situation for Oman in the future. The potential of renewable
resources in delivering power in a cleaner manner cannot be undermined and the key to the
solution of energy crisis of the future lies in adopting technologies that transfer these natural
resources into renewable sources of power. The potential of solar power and wind energy in
Oman is immense. It is extremely necessary to look into these aspects of harnessing these
resources and implementing them for generation power mostly electricity to deliver and meet
the demands of the future.

This proposal is aimed to find out the critical success factors that are responsible for
the development of renewable energy resources in the Sultanate of Oman. The subsequent
sections will review the available literature and will outline the research methodology and the
research objectives to detail out the way this project will be conducted.
Research objective
The objective of the research to find out the factors that can convert the potential resources of
energy into renewable sources of energy. The objective of the research is to find

Methodology
In order to understand the current scenario of the scope of potential resources in the
Sultanate of Oman, we will adopt a mixed approach methodology whereby the relevant
literatures will be reviewed to get an understanding about the current scenario of renewable
resources in the Sultanate of Oman. The government reports and the reviews will be analysed
through collecting information from the government portals and the websites. The literature
review will look across peer journals and research paper that look into the various objectives
of the issue and the research papers that would be reviewed will discuss the paper that have
been researching on technologies of renewable resources, on papers that researched on
prospects of renewable energy and their establishments in similar environment as compared
to the Sultanate of Oman.

Data Collection
The major information and the data will be collected from secondary sources and will be
evaluated by comparing the available information. The major information regarding
background information and prospect of the renewable resources in the sultanate of Oman
will be analysed through the peer reviewed journals. The scope and the prospect of the region
with respect to establishing of renewable resources will be collected from governmental
websites and portals. The various initiatives and the programs that are being initiated or is in
the process will be reviewed to get an understanding of the current scenario. Initially no
ground surveys or interviews will be conducted since the factors will be reviewed through
interpreting the information that will collected from these websites and the journals.
The global report published by the United Nations and the World Bank will be reviewed to
get an idea about the current status of the Sultanate of Oman with respect to the world
scenario. These global reports will also give an idea about the development of the renewable
resources in the Sultanate of Oman.
Research Approach
The research approach will involve qualitative approach and interpretavism. The data that
will be obtained will be reviewed to make an overall analysis and thereby outline the critical
factors that are responsible for the growth of renewable resources in the Sultanate of Oman.
This approach has been adopted since the data and the information that will be collected has
to be interpreted and evaluated through comparison and interpretavism. This approach will
also allow to analyse the various data that will be collected and also point out the various
factors that would promote the growth of renewable resources in the Sultanate of Oman.

Literature review
The literatures that have been reviewed for the course of the research have involved
literatures throughout the international panorama including literatures on the Sultanate of
Oman. The ministry of Water Resources of Oman also referred as Dam is accountable and
responsible for the potential usage of the renewable energy in generating electricity.
The main of Diam is to study the potential of renewable energy in generating alternate
sources of energy. The ministry of Water resources have decided to act with coordination
with various international consultants and therefore generate prospects for the generation of
electricity from renewable resources. The most probable sources of renewable energy that
Oman has includes huge potential of solar power, and wind power and tidal power form the
gulf. Oman has one of the highest solar energy density in the world and therefore it is
immensely important to harness this immense potential to the best possible way.
As Kazem, (2011) finds out in his comprehensive research about the future prospects
of renewable energy in Oman states that there is immense potential and is immensely
necessary to implement these potential sources of power to generate considerable amount of
power. The author also looks into the future prospects of Renewable energy in Oman and it
gives an immense support for the background of the research.
A.H. Al-Badi, A. Malik, and A. Gastli, (2009) have made an assessment of the
potential of renewable resources in the Sultanate of Oman. The author has researched into the
barriers that restrict the development of renewable resources in the Sultanate of Oman. The
paper also reviews the most important aspects of the issues that is necessary to understand
before the identification of the critical factors is done. The paper adds credibly to the
literature review of the research and lays out the basis through which this research would be
conducted.

A. Al Malki, M. Al Amri and H. Al Jabri, (1998) gives an experimental research of
the using renewable energy in the rural areas of Oman and being conducted in 1998 allows us
to understand the past scenario. This paper acts as a standard to understand the development
that ah happened over the years and makes the comparison of the current scenario easier. The
paper also allows to understand the trend over which the development of the renewable
resources have taken place in the Sultanate of Oman.
A.K. Hussein, (2011) have reviewed the issues that have been discussed over the
years regarding the potential of the renewable and clean energy in Oman. This paper have
reviewed the current scenario over the years and have contributed greatly in gathering
information about the prospects that have been mentioned in this paper. Being published in
2011 this paper also ads credibly to the historical information regarding the prospects and the
future of renewable energy in Oman.
Y. Al Hatmi and C.S. Tan, (2013) on the contrary have reviewed the various issues
and their challenges related with Renewable Energy in Oman which is extremely important to
understand as the barriers and the issues are some of the major factors that need to be
reviewed in order to identify the critical factors that can motivate the growth of renewable
energy in the Sultanate of Oman. The works of M. Yaqoot, P. Diwan and T.C. Kandpal,
(2016), have also identified the barriers and the dissemination of the renewable energy
systems which are decentralized in manner. This article finds out and outlines the key issues
that are fundamental in adding to the key barriers of implementing renewable and cleaner
sources of energy in Oman. The paper outlines the current condition of Oman and states it
place in producing petroleum in the world scenario. The current state of the oil resources of
Oman is getting depleted and it is time that alternate sources of energy are researched and
developed to meet the growing demands of the future. The paper takes into account the
efforts of Rural Areas Electric Company which has initiated the several schemes as a pilot

scale project. The authors have reviewed these projects and have tried to evaluate the
scenario of renewable energy resources in Oman from these projects.
The works of W.E. Alnaser and N.W. Alnaser, (2011). Reviews the status of renewable
energy in the GCC countries and gives a comparative understanding about the use of
renewable and sustainable energy options in the region. This paper reviews the use of
renewable energy and other cleaner sources of energy in the Gulf Cooperation Council
countries. This paper gives great information in understanding the nature and prospect of
renewable energies of the Gulf Countries. This article thereby adds greatly to the literature
review of the research by allowing us to understand the scenario at the gulf countries with
respect to renewable energies.
O. Nematollahi, H. Hoghooghi, M. Rasti and A. Sedaghat, (2016), have also provided a great
support and have researched about the current energy demand in the Middle East with respect
to the aspect of renewable energy resources. The authors have done great research and have
credibly added value in understanding the demand of energy in the gulf countries and the way
these are currently met. The paper outlines the dependency of these countries on petroleum
and points the necessity to initiate searching for alternate options of energy in these countries
and therefore adds to the understanding of this research. The paper holds credible insight into
the growing demands which is prospect for the future and needs to be adequately catered to
meet the demands of the future.
Research ethics:
The research has been conducted by maintain the ethical considerations. While collecting
information it has been kept in mind that that the adequate acknowledgements are made. All
the resources have been adequately cited and the resources that have been collected from the
government websites such as the Ministry of Water resources have been acknowledged. Prior

permission have been taken to access the information and represent it. Apart from these
special care has been taken to keep the research free of plagiarism and maintain its
uniqueness. The information that have been accessed from the library has also been
acknowledged.
Awareness of Potential Difficulties:
Throughout the conducting of the survey, there were certain difficulties that were
faced. Firstly the collection of adequate data and validating them was one of the major
difficulties that might be faced while conducting the research. The tabulation of the data
involves understanding of the data and information that is available. The data that is available
is so diverse that the assessment if the data within a single understanding framework is
difficult. The other difficulties will also include trying to understand and evaluate the factors
that have been mentioned in the literatures and thereby create a basis for analysing the current
issues in the light of renewable resources.
Time Line of the Project
The project is expected to be complete by the assigned date and the planning has been
adequate made. The gnatt chart below will guide us through the course of the project, the
time line each subsequent part will be complemented. The research and data collection is
supposed to end by June 2019 and the subsequent analysis and research will thereafter be
conducted to derive an effective output and complete the project in time.

The Selection of the research topic and the literature review is expected to be completed by
the first month since the initiation of the project. The process of data collection and data
analysis will be extended from the first month and is supposed to be completed by the end of
the second month and the final assessment of the data and compilation of the thesis is
expected to be completed by the end of the third month.
Conclusion:
The research is supposed to find and identify the critical factors that would lead to the success
of the renewable energy in the Sultanate of Oman. The paper is also expected to find the
reasons that have hindered its growth and would recommend the ways that needs to be
implemented to make the establishment of renewable energy facilities a success. The most
important aspect that this research will aim to find is the major factors that influence and
manipulate the growth of renewable energy resources and their facilities and the way these
factors should be managed to create scope and opportunity for the growth of renewable
energy resources in the Sultanate of Oman. As we have understood that Solar power and
