This supplementary material provides a detailed description of the three tasks used to estimate the team player effect (Optimization, Memory, and Shapes) along with our validation task (Cryptography). All the tasks aimed to meet three criteria. First, we sought tasks that could be administered to both individuals and groups, with only minor modifications between the individual and group versions. This enabled us to estimate group performance controlling for individual task-specific skill. Second, tasks needed to be objective in the sense that we could easily rank performance across individuals and groups. Third, since we are interested in studying teamwork, we looked for tasks where cooperation among group members would plausibly improve performance.
