Iowa’s Senator
Senator Joni Ernst is a member of the American senate. She represents the state of Iowa.
She has been a senator since 2015. She has made history since she is the first woman to become
a member of the senate. As a political leader, she has her views on different issues that affect the
citizens that she leads and represent. In the issue of immigration, Joni called for US government
to conduct a thorough vetting process for all immigrants like the Syrian refugees. She cited that
the former president Obama had no comprehensive and clear communication strategy on the
issue of immigrants. In the year 2018, the senator wrote to the secretary for defense indicating
that the decision to try immigrants in military courts was not a good one. She said according to
her own view that that was using the military in an inappropriate way. When the current
president proposed 5.7 billion to be set aside for the construction of a wall at the borders, she
believed that not all areas require a physical barrier since there exists technologies that monitor
the borders (Boyd, 7).
There has been a proposal to ban lawfully owned firearms and magazines (Brown, 14).
Senator Joni is against the proposal since she is also a gun holder. She has shown her support to
allow law-abiding citizens to carry weapons like guns but follow the rule of not carrying them in
public buildings like schools. On the issue of mass shooting like the one that happened in Las
Vegas, she believes that it is a cowardice act of senseless violence. She strongly believes that the

main cause of mass shooting is mental illness (Kaiser, 21). On the issue of abortion, the senator
joined other senators in re-introducing the unborn child protection act. This would see to it that
the unborn were protected from being aborted. She supported the abolition of funds that were set
aside that aided in funding abortion. She only supports abortion on the ground that the mother’s
life is in danger due to the pregnancy.
The senator has also had a lot of bills which she has proposed and tabled them in the
senate. She had proposed the elimination of Internal Revenue Service. She worked on it and
bored fruits as property tax in Iowa was reduced. She has demonstrated her unending support for
amendment of the federal budget in numerous occasions. She argues that there is a great need to
reduce the spending incurred by the program of entitlement. In addition, she advocates for
reduction in discretionary spending. She also supported the new act of healthcare that aims ar
replacing the Affordable Care Act. She was one of the ardent supporters of the bill proposing
that every American citizen be provided with health care insurance (Vogel, 7). She argued that
this insurance should be provided even to those who have chronic illnesses such as cancer. Ernst
is a strong believer of marriage and she was a co-sponsor of a bill which was seeking marriage to
be legally defined as a union involving a male and a female although the bill failed.
