Literature Review
AI Summary
This literature review explores the incorporation of sustainability into engineering practices, emphasizing the integration of ecological, economic, and social features in design evaluations. It addresses the challenge of converting sustainability concepts into qualitative design tools and performance metrics, highlighting the importance of sustainable development in supporting social progress and economic stability while protecting the environment. The review analyzes research on career prospects related to sustainability influencing engineering education choices, perceptions of sustainability among engineering professionals, and the obstacles in implementing sustainable design values. Key studies reveal that students interested in addressing sustainability issues are more likely to pursue engineering, while a lack of understanding and awareness among practitioners hinders the adoption of sustainable designs. The review concludes by emphasizing the need for focused sustainability education and a rethinking of engineering professional norms to promote whole-system design approaches.

1SUSTAINABILITY IN ENGINEERING
The incorporation of sustainability into the products, services, technology systems and process
usually means the mixing ecological, economical and the social features in evaluating the
designs. This can be considered as the challenge in converting the concepts of the sustainability
into the qualitative design tools and the performance metrics in the engineering field. The
concept of sustainable development supports the social development and the strong economic
condition in respect to the people with the lower income of living. It also highlights the
significance of protecting the environment and natural resources. Traditionally, sustainability has
positioned restrictions on the organizations, and recently it has become the basis of innovations
and inspirations. The companies have also started to put efforts in designing the business models
based on sustainability. It also became critical concerns of the engineering managers within the
organization. The sustainability-designing engineers are working on the projects designing that
reduces the consumption of the natural properties and designing of projects reduces the energy
consumptions, water consumptions and other. Doing all these provides a comfortable and better
environment for the employees, and it reduces the organization’s carbon footprint (Spangenberg,
2013).

Sustainability as a route to broadening participation in engineering. Journal of engineering

Sustainability is considered as the vital considerations for the engineers. The purpose of the
research is to find out the answer of the major important questions that is how the career result
prospects are associated to the sustainability in predicting the selection of an engineering for the
higher studies and the broader sustainability is associated to the results that the students perceive
about the engineering. For this research work, the study has surveyed collecting the various

responses regarding the sustainability and the other interested students in different sectors from
the national sample of college. The data collected were analysed by the descriptive statistics and
the correlational analysis. This was found out that the students those who address the various
sustainability issues like the energy, climatic change, water supply and others are more likely
towards pursuing energy. The students those who identified sustainability issues as the
opportunity for women, poverty, minorities, and diseases are less interested in pursuing
engineering. The students who perceived the refining superiority of life and saving lives, all were
related with engineering and they are more interested in pursuing the profession.
According to Chitchyan (2016), Sustainability has become one of the main concern in the
society, but there is slight confusion in understanding that how the engineering professionals
perceive the sustainability and in what way the sustainability design can become the rooted part
of the software engineering process. This paper provides the results of the qualitative study that
discovers the perceptions of the engineering specialists and the approaches towards
sustainability. This also involves the obstacles and the reduction strategy about the application of
the sustainability design values in the daily work life. This study reveals the various factors,
which helps to prevent the sustainability designs and the software practitioners are found to have
less understandings of the idea of sustainability. According to Stansinoupolos et al. 2013, The
organisations showed a restricted awareness of their possible benefits and opportunities. The
findings in this study suggest the requirement of the focused effort in the sustainability
educations and the engineering professional norms and practices are needed to be a rethink.
